ok well I finally did it and enrolled into the police academy and well this is something that I have always wanted to do

 

so what I need from some of you guys is well anything about being a officer

this is gonna happen fast and I know that I'm ready but still I guess I'm nervous about this new career

 

so I know some of you guys are on the force so give me some insight or tips or whatever

Stepside hit it dead on. I was an auxiliary for a local department for 2yrs before being hired on the current place. One of the guys I rode with while an aux told me to treat others like you'd like your family treated. Obviously people often times are going to make the decision of how you'll treat them for you. I kind of have a personal phrase that I try to go by- I try to be Firm but Fair. I'm probably one of the most aggressive traffic guys on our dept, but at the same time, if I stop someone and have multiple violations, etc, I'll write 1 and then cut them the break on some others. I started on the motorcycle last year when they decided to reform a unit. That's been an absolute blast especially with not having ridden at all before. It's amazing how frequently people will actually thank me when I ticket them. So I guess the summary I can give you is your actions and words can leave a lasting impression.

na its real as soon as i told my boss what i was doing he said goodbye so this is for real

 

and it really sucks that i have to do that but as i really havent had to ask anyone for help since i was 16 with my first car

 

so pride out the window thats what im doing plus tring to get another job asap but the first pay check will be atleast 2 weeks from now

Not all academy's are the same. Some are short others are long. Mine beat the living $hit out of all of us in a bar on our first day as a welcome package.....We got revenge at the end of our term. Some academy's are totally book work with very little fighting. Good luck and welcome.

I'm more on the federal level here, (Customs) and the best i can offer is what's been said have a good attitude and remember most of the everyday you people you deal with are good people. With that being said you will encoutner your fair share of scumbags and dirt who will often get your mind thinking that everyone is trash.

Be sure to leave work at work and home at home try not to mix the two, and always focus on your family. When duty calls you have to go but you never know if it will be your last day with the family. Me i'm currently single but i also know that there is a huge divorce rate with law enforcement. When you become law enforcement in any capacity you will find yourself in a family. You will make so many friends who will always be there at the drop of a hat. It's hard to explain but you will soon see. Of course as mentioned thick skinned. I'm 23 and started at 20. I was very heavy on the badge and thinned skinned. I've learned to enjoy and have fun and not be heavy on the badge there is no point. It is O.K to be upset with what you see and encounter and cry. People alway's say it isnt but it is. If you hold of these back they will build up and cause issue's down the road. Just dont show these emotions in front of the public. Utilize the Chaplain if need be and dont try to fix all of the issue's with "Choir Practice" thats when everyone go out's to the bar and "sings" (talk) about work etc. Usually this results in alot of drinking to ease heavy minds. Be careful with this. But at the same time they can be fun.

Of course be prepared for pratical jokes it's always fun and i've yet to know of any law enforcement officer who hasnt been harrassed one way or another by his or her fellow officer's. Become friends with other officer's from other agencie's as it will prove very helpful in your carrer i myself have many contacts from all over the U.S and many agencie's. Remember teamwork and you always have only one goal at the end of the shift, to go home alive with your other officer's. With all that being said the best of luck to you and congradulations.

Down here our sheriff's hire rookie's with no experience and send them to the police academy, They pay for uniforms, give you a unit (usually a clunker) to go to school in as well as pay for school and you get a pay check. I guess things are different in other states.
