FEEL BUMPS IN STEERING WHEEL

Thanks for the info about the trans temp gauge. I was wondering if anybody has complained about feeling little bumps through the steering wheel while driving. I have driven a 3/4 ton truck and it did the same thing there is no play side to side it just feels like there is about 1/4 inch play up and down when i hit little bumps is this normal? I have 305/70/16 tires with 16x10 wheels. Maby that has something to do with it.

Sounds like you probably have the infamous intermediate steering shaft knock. It feels something like someone is hitting the steering shaft with a padded hammer.

There's a new design shaft for this concern. See your dealer.

Sounds like the same thing I went through. I think it came to my attention because of a recall a few years back. Started again here a fews months back and they got it right this time. New design should work better.

I have a 2005 Siverado 4 x 4 and it has the infamous steering shaft knock which feels exactly like was described in the first post. I took it in with about 12000 miles on it. The dealer figured it was the intermediate shaft. They had everything there ready to do it and then they realized I had a 2005 and "that already has the new style steering shaft". So they scratched their heads and I showed them the up and down movement in the wheel. They figured it was the bearings in the steering column and ordered those. After they replaced them, the shaft felt good again for about 5000 miles and then it started doing it again. I now have 22000 miles on it and it is doing it worse and worse with every mile. I notice it most in left hand corners at about 35 mph, but you can feel it all the time.

So is it true that the 05 and up have the new shaft? And if so have you seent he new shaft do this? Or what do you think I should have them look for? It is very annoying and makes this whole truck feel so cheap. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, they do, but it doesn't matter. The "new design" doesn't really fix it either. In fact, they just came out with yet another TSB saying don't replace the shafts anymore, just lube 'em with this new lube they're supplying. They say it works better than the new shaft.

Get it lubed. That'll fix it for quite some time, though probably not forever.

How much is the going cost to have it lubed at the dealer?

All my tools are in storage still.......kinda hard for me to do my own work on my truck at my current apt.

I've done the lube procedure, and I kept the injector and plug. I read that you can use a certain type of grease that's readily available, so I don't have to keep buying the kit every time I need to do this.

What grease should you use?

That quite some time is usally less then a couple months hell its been two grand since i had a new shaft installed and already feel it losening up.I have already stated to the service manager at my dealer that i will never be paying for any service performed on this steering shaft as long as i own this truck.If gm doesnt care to make a correct fix then i dont care to compensate gm for any amount of time and materials that they use on it!

Since the new 900's are due out very soon i think you will never see a correct and proper fix for this issue which is why gm should be forced to goodwill this part for the life of the vehical to all silverado and tahoe owners who suffer thu this problem!

ive got the same problem on my 05 z71 crew cab. i feel the bumps in the steering wheel...its not horrible, yet its still kind of irritating considering i have a new truck and it already feels like its breaking. anyone know if theyll cover it since it only has 12k miles? i figure it should still be under factory warranty no?

Yes these are covered but like gm tech said now they just try a pass off a lube job as a fix for it!I would bitch and tell them you want a new shaft and not the even more temp fix of lubing it!For the most part my truck has been great and knew these shafts were a problem but still dont see why they cant find some kind of perminate fix instead of packing it full of greese which will never hold up!

Well, once again, for at least the fourth time, the steering knock is back. My trruck now has 40000 miles on it and the dealer will only "remove the shaft and push it in and out four or five times because that is all it usually takes to make the knock go away".

I think I know why GM doesn't goodwill the part, because they figure if they just keep pumping our shafts full of grease, out warranty will run out and they are out of the woods. I find it very disturbing that GM has known of the problem for years and has done nothing to offer a permanent fix.

So tomorrow morning I'll be getting my shaft pumped and we'll see how long it lasts.

I have read on here that there is a sticky with pictures and the procedure to re-pack it with grease yourself but I can not find that sticky. Anyone have a link?

I just had mine lubed at the dealer. It was 120.00. I saw a new steering column on summitracing.com that says will fix the problem. Wish I had seen it before I paid the dealer. I think its like 190.00
