Replacing blower,resister and relay 97

I have a 97 k1500 with a 5.7. It has 91K on it.

The blower stopped working. It does not run on any speeds. I did check the fuse and its fine. One other thing is it was making a electrical smell burning smell.

I know were the resister, blower and relay are. I would like to know it you can change the relay and resister from behind the glove compartment? If not i heard you have to roll the console back. I was looking for how to do that but have not seen anything in the service manual on it.

If its the blower do you have to remove the bolts from the fire wall to take out the hole assembly? Do you have to drain the radiator?

Thanks for any help.

I'm about to have to do that soon too. My 97 has that same smell, for about a couple weeks now. I try to keep it on high, and adjust the temp only. I haven't gotten into it yet, but when I briefly looked at it, it looks like everything got done from the inside, under the dash. If I'm wrong, someone please chime in and help! ;) I could use the knowledge too!

Tried new blower motor in parking lot of AutoZone. Blower motor worked fine on all speeds.

Blower Motor was $60. Seamans PM149 new.

One bolt was a pain to remove and replace. (bottom right side) Had to buy a 7/32 wrench. Could not fit socket in the area.

Had to remove passenger floor side molding and I broke the tab off the foam cover at the bottom. Had to remove the glove compartment too.

Well I haven't noticed the smell anymore, and it still works ok, or at least seems to anyway. Thanks for the info on it though. I'll keep an eye on it though, and at least now I know it's not too bad of a change.

I'm suffering the same problem. Except, I've had it for much longer. The first time the blower started to work only on the two highest fan settings. I replaced the switch controls and everything worked fine for about 1 1/2 years.

Last summer I had to replace the evaporator and heater core on my truck. The blower motor went out just before starting. As I was removing the dash, I noticed the wire harness to the blower motor was partially melted. I cut it out and replaced with covered male/female connectors. Blower motor works again. Three weeks later the one of the three wires melts the connector. I replaced it and everything has been fine for the last year. Just this last month, I only have the top two fan speeds again. I checked the wiring and it looks fine.

I'm losing my mind trying to figure out what I need to fix. Was the blower motor the solution to your problem? I thought replacing the controls fixed mine, but it's back.

I'm suspect of the ground for the blower motor. The ground wire is attached to one of the mounting screws for the blower motor and the motor is self grounding. I wonder if the ground just has a bad connection?

Hello All,

It seems that the years of 1996 - 1997 or so are all having the same problems.

The wiring for the blower motor circuit has melting connectors.

The solution is to replace all the connectors at the switch, blower motor, resistor, etc.

Also check a couple of inches back on each wire, to ensure that the wiring is in good shape.

You can purchase most of these connectors from the dealer.

Most are pretty cheap, yes even from the dealer.

Also have found bad switches with burn marks on the inside of the connector & switch.

Best of luck to all.
