programmers or chips?

Hi everyone. I am looking into getting 4.10 gears for my 1995 Z71 truck. Currently, it has 3.42 gears. 350 TBI engine stock. I have read here about programmers for the newer trucks but mine is a '95 obs. I read that I can't use a programmer and must replace the chip in my truck. What brand chip do I buy to change the gears. Oh and before I forget, I want to go from my current 285/75R16 (32.8") to 315/70R17 (34.8"). I'm thinking BFG Mud terrains on American Racing Baja rims. Anyway, any help would be appreciated or what key words to use when doing a search regarding a '95 truck.

Adding a chip or programmer to your truck does nothing to your gearing. To change gearing you have to physically change the gears in the front and rear differential.

 

If you can't do it yourself,and not to be rude, but it sounds like you can't, it'll run somewhere around $1000 per diff.

 

If you're going to install tires close to 35" tall,you'll probably want gears more like 4.56s.

I understand that it does nothing for the gearing. Hence why I want to change gears. Adding the chip will let me specify tire size and it will change shift points so that my tranny wil work better no?

 

As for doing the job myself, yeah I have someone who can do this for me. It's not anything like adding a lift kit.

 

As for the 4.56 gears. Really? Thanks. I saw here before a chart Tire size vs Gear size and the RPM range for them. I will have to do a search for that. If anyone has it, please post.
