My new suburban sucks, need some repair help

Just bought a Chevy 99 2500 4x4 and I've got to say, it rides nice but I need to have some work done to it because....well, GM can't engineer some stuff worth a d**n.

I'm getting 16MPG MOSTLY HIGHWAY, I was expecting to get somewhere around 18ish.

The drivers seat was worn, since the leather in almost any 96 or newer GM truck starts to disintigrate after about 3 years. Its going to be $350 to redo the seat that your butt sits on, I dont even want to know what the seatback would cost too...

I've got a busted or leaky wiper fluid tank, I dumped a gallon of blue stuff in and it just went straight under and hit the driveway. Anyone have experience fixing that?

It could be just a loose hose, but I've seen these tanks crack before and I'm pretty sure that's what it is but I've never had to fix one. I'd play with it some, except I've got a battery on top of it and I don't feel like lugging it out and playing "guess where the leak is" right now.

AC Compressor is cycling, I think it just needs a shot of 134a. Anyone have 2 cents to kick in?

Besides not knowing how to set the clock for freaking daylight savings time - thats everything wrong with it. Can anyone gimme any help?

How many miles are on it. Sounds like you're within expectations as far as mpg. The wear is typical of any leather seat really. Especially the butt part, since you have a truck, which is climbed into, rather than a car which you just drop your butt on. If it is your wiper fluid tank that's leaking, then any decent epoxy that can resist ammonia will do. There's no pressure in the tank, and the fluid isn't a solvent or anything. My ac compressor was doing the same thing. I've had 3 mechanics trouble shoot (1 being the dealer who still didn't find it). I've had 2 different new compressors installed, and still it did that. Turns out there was also a leak in the part that actually cools the air going into the cabin. A mechanic friend of mine ended up looking at it after 2 failed attempts at the dealership. He dumped about 2-3 times the recommended amount of leak indicator in the ac system. We finally found the leak as it ran down the firewall! Anyway, the best thing to do is have a leak test done on it to make sure it'll hold a charge before having it filled and wasting it. As for the clock, turn the radio off, and hold the "H" or "M" button until the time changes. I think that was how it was done.

The truck is seven years old. It seems to be mechanically sound. The wiper resivoir should be an elementary fix. Seats are just wear and tear. The fuel mileage sounds about right for that size of vehicle. Our 99 Escalade did not get much better. I would just have the AC system pressured up and checked for leaks, I would bet that is your problem. It sounds like your making a mountain out of a mo-hill. You bought it. On a test drive the compressor and seat should have jumped out at you. I can't see an Engineering defect, just age and typical wear.

I've got 99.8 on it. I thought the diesels should get better than 16.

Thanks for the info though, I swung my my mechanic and I'm gonna have him check the rear end, transfer case and drop all 12 quarts of oil and pump in some fresh rotella. I'll have my detailer redo the tank after I order the part and I'll get some 134 with leak stop over at autozone.

DUKE............Are you the SAME guy with the 99 burb that has

spamming up all the other GM truck forums boards with your problems?

I didn't note on this forum about your interior water leaks.......

Yet you post HERE about AC compressor problems along

with a leaky wiper fluid tank.............

I also note that you posted HERE that it is a USED vehicle.........

The other forums you posted you bought it NEW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"looks like a duck.........quacks like a duck"............Hmmmm!

NEw member too guys..................................geo

This is my first post on any GM board about it. Why - is there someone else with the same problems? I think it's kinda impossible since I bought a 99 on TUESDAY and buying it new would mean I ordered the GM Time Warp Option package.

OK Duke..............We will give ya the benefit of the doubt and

try to lend a hand.........................

AC compressor WILL recycle on and off at times esp. when using

defrost (to remove humidity). Even with the AC off !!!

Does not ness. mean you need a 134 recharge. Come the heat of

summer....You will know if it needs a recharge............................

The leaky washer tank...............Just cheap made in mexico

plastic. (Darn NAFTA!)

Best to remove and try and patch up with a plastic repair goo

you can find in the local big box parts store.

Go to a junk yard and dig another one up used.

Or ya gotta bite the bullet and buy a new one................

The ripped seat leather............Maybe the previous owner had

a BIG butt or had a knife in his pocket.

My leather in my 96 Caddy was wrinkled but not ripped when I

traded it in on my 03 caddy.

Not much you can do. How about buting a cheap seat cover

at the parts store when your picking up the washer tank fix goo?

Your MPGS? You can't expect better.............

Your driving a BIG thirsty vehicle ! My 04 2500 x-cab 4x4 6.0

is a real gas pig.

But GOTTA have it to snowplow or heavy tow duty !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Set your radio.........Don't know which one you have.

But a quick look-see thru your owners manual should tell you.

Thats why I tell ANYONE who is gonna purchase a used vehicle

to spend the $100 bucks or so and have a trusted mechanic/tech

inspect that vehicle top to bottom for ANY problems BEFORE

you lay out that cash !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck and keep us posted.........................geo

BTW: Is your truck a dark blue?

Wow that was hard to read. Cut down on the punctuaton or the coffee.

Kicking the AC on max here in FL ran the compressor intermittently, I'm gonna have to go check the pressure later this week with a friend's rig.

GM has been having wiper tank problems in the suburbans for over 10+ years, I've seen 01's with the same problem. You'd think they'd learn after a while.

GM seat leather, regardless of butt size seems to recurringly fall apart after about 3-5 years. Any 99ish GM truck I've seen has disintigrating leather whereas on my older than 99 non gm cars with leather that have more miles are holding up better.

You don't really have a chance to pre-sale inspect a car at the auction through your mechanic.

If I had a manual and knew how to set the clock, I wouldn't be asking here for advice on how to set it. I did figure I'd get a RTFM response though.

Ahhh a auction mobile well you pays yer money and take your chances when buying any auction car prob. thats why it ended up at a auction and NOT at a retail dealer front line ready for sale with a warranty I hope you paid a lot LESS than retail for that vehicle right So you bought a vehicle with NO pre-inspection at a auction with NO warrantyWell with the unknown comes the problems and your either gonna have to spin the wrench yourself or PAY out the behind to have your truck repaired to NEW conditionGood luck !

BTW I have had SEVERAL full size GM trucks and they ALL use the SAME windshield washer bottle Yours is the first problem I have ever read in ANY GM truck forum with one

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
