5 speed pops out of first gear

My 99 1500 has a 4.8 with the 5 speed manual tranny and every once in a while, the tranny will pop out of first gear when I go to take off. Any suggestions on what to look at would be appreciated.

Check for a broken motor mount or trans mount. Also crawl under the truck and see if any bolts on the shift linkage are loose or missing.

Many times this is as simple as incorrectly adjusted shift linkage. Don't let this continue as it beats up the transmission synchronizers.

Make sure the shifter fullly engages the gear easily so the detent ball in the trans snaps in place to hold the shift fork in gear.

Have you put any kind of a body lift on it? If so you may need to notch the hole the shifter comes thru..

The truck is all stock. Great suggestions from all. I'm putting it on the lift this weekend and go through the linkage and check the motor mounts and tranny mount conditions. I appreciate the help...

If everything else checks out, it could be bad bearings in the tranny. Unfortunately you will need to pull the tranny and tear it down to inspect all hte bearings.

If i remember correctly there isnt any linkage think its a top loader. Worn pilot bushing and input shaft bearing alond with more internal parts maybe bad.

i REMEMBER THE OLDER dAKOTAS HAD A PROBLEM WITH THE RUBBER COMPOUIND IN THE SHIFT BOOT BEING TO STIFF, ON COLD MORNINGS IT WOULD PULL THE TRUCK OUT OF GEAR. nOT SURE ITS A SIMILAR PROBLEM BUT SOMETHING SIMPLE LIKE THAT COULD BE THE CAUSE.

Crap...

The tranny is a toploader so I may be digging into it deeper than I had hoped to check out everything. I'm still going to look at the tranny and motor mounts and pull up the boot to see if anything is interfering with the stick shift itself.
