A.I.R. system for emission reduction, removal?

I have a 1988 GMC K1500 and was told that I am losing power from the A.I.R. or pulse air system(not really sure what it is called). I was also told that it is only required in California for smog reduction and I was wondering how hard it is to remove it and if anyone had directions on how to do it. Or am I really losing power and is it worth removing?

Thats BS. In NC they are supposed to check to see if its there during the annual safety/emission inspection.

Dont take it off, even if you can get around the inspection issue it would lower the resale value.

If you look at the underhood belt routing sticker, there will be mulitiple belt layouts shown, including one without AIR pump. You can just buy the belt that eliminates it from the rotation. My 89 came from Idaho and had AIR, but I know of a 1990 in Michigan that did not come with it.

It's an 88 so the value can't go much lower, I was just wondering if it was taking away a decent amount of power.

Actually, The A.I.R. pump does not steal the power. All it does is inject fresh air into the exhaust to help the catalytic converter to burn more efficeintly. It more of a hassle to plug the hoses and cap the exh. manifold ports than it's worth. But that's just my opinion.
