COLD Allison sluggish shift

Is it normal for the Allison to be sluggish shifting when cold?

 

When I first crank the truck, shift into gear and the temps are below 40, it seems to take a LONG while before the trans engages.

 

Fluid is relatively new and at the proper level according to the dipstick.

Mine did the same thing every time it was cold. It would also do it when the truck sat for a long time without being driven.

 

My truck was a 2004 GMC 2500 HD 4x4 Reg. Cab 8.1 / Allison - Its now sold. Replaced by a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland.

 

Did it since day one.

Normal? Couldn't say.

 

But mine does tend to be a little sluggish in the colder temps. This morning was the worst though. 25 degrees and it took a long time to shift going down the road. Also felt like the slip between gears was extended.

 

Fluid & filters have maybe 5K miles on them.

I haven't noticed anything like that with mine.

 

I usually fire the truck up and immediatly drop it into gear and idle it out of the garage, where it then sits for several minutes idleing before I leave for work. (Diesel exhausts tends to linger in the garage so that's why I move it outside).

 

 

It does seem to hold the gears a little longer before shifting, but I think it says in the manual that it does this to help warm everything up a little faster...

I let the truck idle for 10-15 seconds and everything seemed fine

Dealer tells me this is normal.

It's normal. It's a shift and torque managment strategythat actually extends transmission life.
