Busted out of work at 4, off to salvage yard.

Found three (3) potential 5.7 engines for rebuild.

Picked one out of a 96 full size van with 140K. (The van engines seemed recessed so much that they are more protected from the scavengers and elements, this yard leaves the hoods up and the vans intakes are essential not under the hood.) Down side is it's a difficult pull, they charge $100 to pull and $150 for the engine. Pick it up Wed and they'll let me mount it to the stand before loading it in the truck.

So whats the deal with the 96 model year 5.7 Liter?

95=Vin Engine Code K and 96=Vin Engine Code R

The 95 has a Throttle Body and the 96 has Central Sequential Fuel Injection...

Thats a big deal...I think...

The 96 has Vortec Heads the 95 has, em, not Vortec Heads...

95 has Hydraulic Lifter / 96 has Hydraulic Roller Lifter

Come on now, OHV is OHV, this is a pushrod engine, period...

Intakes, TBI, CSFI, come on whats so wrong with an Edelbrock below a Holley???

Either way it's a Gen II GM Small Block and heads...

Factory rate HP 95=200@4000 / 96=255@4600...

(On the back porch we settle for nothing under 300...)

You're right, the Vortec 5700 was the next step for the 5.7L. 255hp and 330tq. Plenty of go fast goodies for it if you want to get the +300hp mark.
