Hey all you Mobil 1 guys....

I only have 700 miles on my new Z71 but I think I'll go synthetic and a very good oil filter.

K+N maybe?

Should the engine have sealed by the time I'm at 3,000 miles.

After investing this much money I can't see being cheap on the oil changes.

I chould be able to do it myself for $30 or so and that's about what Zippy Lube would charge

for a dino oil change.

Am I on the right track?

I've got a stockpile of it quite a while back.  Bought around 30 gallons for cheap, so I will be in it for a while.

TGS,  you don't have to have the 3000 miles, but since it is already in there....  You should be able to do it for around $30 (probably on the plus side).  6 quarts of oil plus filter. :)

Hey Victory,

Thanks for that tidbit (I think).  :)  Oh well, another $6 or so every change isn't going to break the piggy bank.

Good to see you posting again Victory!  :)

I never left. Just been very busy at work, and no time to post here. I try to read the forum daily, but haven't had much time to respond to anything lately.

Sorry for being the bearer of bad news. I agree though. Another $6 is not too bad. Could be worse I guess.

I personally use the Castrol 5w-50 snythetic and have been since '94. I now use the k&n oil filter and seem to have great luck with these. I guess all the snythetics are the same. If anyone knows of a website that compares oils unbiased please post it.

No, not all oils are the same.  Some synthetics are true polyalphaolephin (PAO) synthetics while others are "fake synthetics" - extra clean hydroprocessed mineral oil with very good viscosity properties.

True synthetics are Group IV oils and are based on PAO.

Fake "synthetics" are Group III oils which are very clean with synthetic-like viscosity ranges, but are not true synthetics.  Thanks to a ruling by the NAD division of the BBB, it is fully legal to market Group III motor oil as "synthetic".

Group II motor oils are clean hydroprocessed mineral oil.  Most high quality motor oil is Group II.

Group I is solvent-processed mineral oil.  Lower quality motor oil is this group.

Anyway, Mobil 1 synthetic is a Group IV motor oil, which is very good.

Castrol Syntec, on the other hand, is a Group III fake "synthetic".  It was reformulated in Dec. 1997.  Previous to that, it was a Group IV PAO oil.

You can find all this info in a Google search.

I just paid $29.94 minus a 10% discount for a 6 pack of the new stuff.

Not a huge jump from the "OLD" M1

Local Wal-Mart has the 5-qt jugs of the new stuff for $17.84.  I am going to stock up tonight.

(I am currently down to 20 qts)
