electrical problem

I didn't look back through the archives but heres my problem. Several weeks ago my wife was driving our 2002 Dmax and the battery light came on, the truck then dies and she coasts from 50 mph to stop. She turns the key off and back on, truck starts and no more problems. I wasn't in the truck at the time so I wasn't sure exactly what happened. You know... wifes and details. Anyway, 2 weeks later, same thing happens to me. Battery light come on, truck dies, I'm in heavy traffic now, shift to neutral, key off - key on, runs fine again. Anybody have a problem like this? Truck is stock with the exception of Edge juice with attitude on fuel mileage. I had a problem with my first EDGE and sent it back. This unit' manufacture date is like January 5th of this year. Anyway, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

i bet u a pitcher of cold brew its the crank position sensor-- thats EXACTLY what happened to me. Fix it NOW before u get stranded in traffic or it shuts down at freeway speeds. Eventually, it will die and will not start for a long time, which is bad, bad and more bad.

its a tricky procedure not to lose/drop the inner part of the CKP into the bellhousing, (REALLY BAD) so i had my mechanic do it for just under $200.

good luck!

I brought the truck in under warranty last week and told them the whole story. It came back no charge as they couldn't find anything wrong. I told them to check the DTC's but they still said they couldn't find anything wrong. They told me its probably bad fuel. I'm going to bring home the scanner from work this week and check it out myself. The truck has died on me once now and the wife twice. Thanks for the advice,

Chris

search the archives here-- there was quite a discussion last fall about this issue; i think my post was entitled something like 'battery light comes on while driving'. . one of the difficult issues is the trouble codes do not always reveal this problem. believe me, what happened to me is exactly whats happening to you-- and it WILL get worse. my mechanic could not pull a trouble code for CKP, but by golly once it was replaced, it runs better, is more response on the tachometer (it was before sluggish...) and overall a timely fix. i was starting to doubt my truck purchase, but for now, i'm glad i did it when i did.

What did the CKP cost and how long did it take your mechanic to install?

Thanks,

Chris

I hope you fixed your problem. But in case you haven't... a little over $200.00 to diagnose and replace the CKP is correct. If your check engine light did not light up... no codes will show up on your scanner. Doing it yourself will cost you $75 and tax. The replacement part may not look identical to your part. My original part had two o-rings and the replacement part had one o-ring. At one time, both parts were offered by the dealer. Take your time on the removal process. The part is 6-8" long. Pull the sensor straight out with a twisting motion. Replacing the new... be gentle - place a drop of oil on the o-ring and reverse process. Carefully reconnect the harness not to damage the pins.

I havn't had the time to even purchase the part. The truck has had no problems since I removed my edge module. I pull a heavy travel trailer in the summer so I'll definitly replace the CKP, I don't want to be stranded with the wife and kids. Thanks for the advice on replacing the part.

Where is the crank position sensor located.  Sounds like it may not be too difficult to change, just do not know where it is.

It's located on the rear of the engine (near the bell housing). There are two sensors relatively close together. The Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Sensor is the one on top or closest to 11:45 of a clocks face. The Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor is the lower one closest to 11:00 of a clocks face. The CKP Sensor is held in place by a 10mm bolt to the engine block. I've heard of people breaking off the CKP Sensor in the block. Here's what you should do... Care must be taken when removing the CKP Sensor. Use penetrating oil and allow to soak around the CKP Sensor before removing the sensor. Remove the bolt. Twist the sensor to break the o-ring seals loose. When removing the sensor, pull the sensor staight out of the engine block at the same angle the sensor was installed. Failure to be careful may result in sensor damage. When replacing a new CKP Sensor, lubricate the o-ring with engine oil before installing.
