I bought a NOS factory radio for my '03 Silverado off of ebay because the writing on the power and tuning buttons has worn off. When I called my local dealer to inquire the cost of reprogramming it, they quoted me a little over $86!!!! Why does it cost so much to reprogram it? Is there any other means of programming it or more to the point, a cheaper way?

I don't think there is any way to program it yourself. I had a dealer program my NAV unit. I just drove in in the afternoon and asked. It took about 1/2 hour and they charged me $35.

Would this be the procedure?

Radio Locked

That's the one I was thinking of. It's repeated somewhere here on this site too.

I've never tried it but I remembered it and responded to your post to give you some hope.

Good luck!

I'll try it this weekend and let you all know if it worked.

Yes, please do. I have a LUX 6 disk out of a Escalade that I would like to install in my truck. I already have the amp and nav installed, I just want to see if this works out or not. Thanks.

It didn't work for me. I couldn't even get past step one!

That process only works with the older 1.5din size radios (pre-2003). If you have the news double-din radios (with RDS, Nav, XM), they need to be unlocked by a Tech2.

That's what I figured after reading up on it some more. I thought $86+ was way too much to pay to have that done though.
