Broken Mirror

I have a 1999 Silverado. I have the mirrors that you can manually fold in toward the truck, and they also have a little give towards the front in case something hits them. The other day I was backing up and my passenger side mirror caught some branches and it got flipped all the way forward(as if it were a hyper-extended joint). The cable is still attached and I can lift the mirror off the base a few inches and I'm unable to see any broken parts. Is there a way this will go back together with pressure, or am I better off finding a new/used mirror and replacing it? I'd appreciate any help. THANKS

P.S. I have it rigged right now with a black bungy cord wrapped the mirror and the base. It seems to work but doesn't look the best.

It is not likely broken. There is a post that the mirror pivots on. There is a spring that fits over the post and it is compressed and held in place by a friction ring. It can be fixed for $0.

Carefully remove mirror glass by adjusting it all the way in and reaching in with a screwdriver to release clips that go around the backing plate of the glass. Once removed, you will see the problem. It is easiest to completely remove the mirror assembly but I managed to fix it on vehicle. I used a socket to fit over the cap and a large clamp to squeeze the spring and retaining clip back on. Be careful if you have the wire going through the post as you can break it if not careful.

I have had to do this on both mirrors once each.
