Help!! Hypertech problems

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I bought a Hypertech #30012 used off of the site and I am having a hell of a time to get it to work.

Basically when trying to program it, it goes through the self test but eventually comes back with a error saying "Unreconized Calibration, call Hypertech". I called them and they said that my computer must have been updated, and they will update the hypertech for $260.

So Trying to troubleshoot it I did all the basic stuff, hooking it up again, checking the cable, making sure onstar was off, bla bla bla and I still get the same error.

Has anyone seen this before?

Do you know if there were updates to the PCM for a 2002 8.1L since it was released?

Any ideas or know how I can get this fixed.

I have to say I am not impressed with the company, they were jerks on the phone, and wouldn't honor the warentee, and don't clearly state anything about having to pay for updates to the unit. Come on $400 for the unit and $260 for updates down the road, they really don't do that much to be worth the cost.

Any help would be appreacated.

SNYPS..............Send it back to whomever you bought it from

and get a refund. Sounds like the tune has or is still loaded

into another truck.....................

Have you had your truck from new?

Any idea if it has been reflashed at the dealer?

I currenty have a Hypertech 2 in my 6.0 and am happy with it

except for NO programs to overide the torque mgmt..............

My next tune will be a Diablo preditor.................

A PCM custom burn won't work for me because I like to change

the settings from time to time from tow/haul/snowplowing mode

to full tilt prem. gas beat on it mode............LOL!!!!!

I also have the poss. of driveline breakage and warranty service

because I heavy tow and snowplow and want NO warranty hassles

because of mods................geo

The guy sent me one that works, I don't feel ripped off by that person, he was honost about it all, I think the issue is with hypertech and my truck possibally being updated.

I bought it used in July, so the dealer could have updated it. Can I ask them if it was updated and would they be able to tell me?

You said you bought it used on Ebay, therefore there is no warranty. I had similar problems buying a used one on Ebay. I returned 2 before I got one that worked. The first one had not been returned to the stock program (sounds like your problem). The second one was a 30005 which should have worked on my '99 but was an early model and had the wrong revision number so it worked on 2000 only.

Hypertech told me they have hundreds of calls from people who buy them used and have problems. I am selling mine and getting a custom tune from Westers. You get a lot more gains for not much more money. The only thing is you can't change the settings yourself whenever you feel like it.

SNYPS............Go to the GM dealer with your VIN#.

The GM computer system will contain any and all warranty

work/updates/etc. done to your truck from day 1........geo

Called the dealer and they looked under my VIN and there were no updates completed in the history, They don't have a way to confirm that the program I have is the stock program. They are going to look into re programming it with the stock program just to make sure.

I have to say that I am not impressed with the Hypertech customer service. You would think they would help out customers, and even if there was a charge, $260 is way too much to get it updated.

SNYPS................Heck for $260 you can buy a NEW Hypertech

unit !!!!!! A Westers PCM burn is $400, PCM for less runs $250,

Diablo is around $300

The wait 4 me pcm burn for $80 is a DEAL !!!!!!!!!!

Now on the phone they said $250 for the replacement. They said that the version of the hypertech is so old that it will not work on my truck although it says it will.

I guess that the software in it is so out of date, they will have to replace it with a whole new unit, it can't be upgraded..

My choices are:

1. Eat the $$ I paid

2. Send hypertech $250 for a new unit

3. Eat it and buy something else.

Kinda sucks - BUYER BEWARE buying a used unit, they sometimes are not worth it.

SNYPS..........that sucks !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you get a refund?

If it were me and my truck was outta factory warranty I would

spend the $80 bucks for a wait 4 me PCM burn tune..............

I coudn't agree more, avoid Hypertech for their lackluster customer service which is non-existant for a used unit. Here's my story, I bought my '01 HD with 50K on it from an individual. He had purchased a brand new "store bought" Hypertech for it and it was working and came with the truck. I used it several times to change tires sizes and tune etc. I thought it was decent and was happy. Recently on a long trip I determined that my odo/speedo was slightly slow by counting mile markers. So I tried to use the Hypertech to go one size up. Well I always got this "Upload Error" and call Hypertech number. And it would set two codes, throttle signal related. So I call and they say something added on to the trucks electronics is blocking the unit from the PCM. I should disconnect it while using the programmer. So even though nothing has changed I disconnect everything during several attempts to use it with no luck. I disconnect the battery overnight and try again but it's always the same. So I give up and decide to have it seviced. I called Hypertech and asked them how to go about having it seviced. They say I have to send it in with the original reciept. I tell them I don't have the reciept since it came with the truck. They say that they won't work on it. After expressing my discust I tell them that I know the previous owner and if he still has the reciept and sends it in how much will it cost? They say $280, and I'm shocked it costs so much, more than 50% of purchase price. At that point I wrote it off. I would rather invest that much in a custom tune any day. The good thing is that the mild tune and very close tire size is still in my computer. The bad thing is that I can't change it. I've got a whipple here and 4.56 gears and when it comes time to install either I'll have to start over. It costs approximately $150 to have the dealer re-flash my PCM to stock and once that happpens the Hypertech is permanitly locked out of my truck since it has my stock tune stored in it.

I belive that if it's not actually a bad programmer causing my problem but rather that my professional scan tools must have changed something in the PCM that caused the Hypertech to alienate itself. I've done diagnostics, fuel trim resets, and crank relearns etc. with the "tune" in the PCM. If it caused this I don't know, but I do know that there's nothing on my truck that's "blocking" the tuner. I've checked all the equipment and cables etc, and even disasembled the Hypertech to look for issues and found none.

My advice to current Hypertech users is to always remove the tuning whenever your truck will be seviced by yourself or a shop with scan tools. I don't always tell or charge a customer for using mine when it helps me solve a problem or verify a repair on thier vehicle so don't think that your safe for a tune up without a check engine light on. The only thing I changed on mine was the crank sensor profile file, which helped it run better. Now it's a paper wieght. At least it didn't happen with a 93 octane tune in there and cost me $5 everytime I fill up.

Now that I think about it, why am I still carrying it around behind the back seat? I think I should throw it in the scrap pile on top of those Sears floor jacks. LOL
