Information regarding 3/4 and 1 ton trucks...need

Hey all, hope this is in the correct forum.

 

I am looking for a 1997- 2500/3500. I have never owned a Chevy product and don't know what to look for. I am gonna be using this to tow a 20' trailer with Kubota tractor and implements. Total trailer/tractor weight will probably be around 6-8k lbs.

 

I am trying to keep my price below $15k, preferably lower than $12k. I need at minimum an extended cab and would like to get 4wd.

 

I am wondering is a 350 would be adequate or if I should look solely for a 454?

 

What are some problem areas in these trucks? Most likely will be the olf body style.

 

How long can these motors go? I've seen some 454's in the trader with 130-160k miles, just wondering how much life they may have left. (I know alot depends on maintenance, how it's been treated, etc. Just need "average".)

 

Anyone have/had one these trucks that can give me some real-life mileage (I know it ain't gonna be good) estimates, problem areas, etc, etc.
