steering shaft clunk on silverado

Hey guys I have an 05 silverado crew cab that I bought last year. It now has 13000 miles on it and developed the dreaded clunk in the steering wheel. I took it to the dealer and they said that it was the intermediate steering shaft and they relubed it. Well that fixed it for now but I am worried as soon as warranty is out it will do it again and I will be out the money. I asked service manager and he said they were replacing them but now GM says to just lube until new shaft is designed. Does this sound correct? Thanks

Yep,GM is back to just relubing them for now.

Don't waste your time at the Dealer....the "clunk" WILL come back...spend a few $$ now and be done with it...see below -

Wow I cannot beleive that GM has know this for years and cannot find a fix. I have always been a GM guy but I am doubting myself now. How can they not find a fix? Now i know why they are going bankrupt.

Good, i thought it was just mine that did that. Im taking it in for a couple of things this week before my warrenty is up. I think they are going to be pissed with all i have to complain about, but i paid for it so they better not BS me. I believe i need new clutch packs in the LSD, if not the the spring is broken, that steering clunk, Defrost/ heat Acuator, seats had some foam underneith pull up and make a lump, gotta bring up the 5.3 knock, and when i get on the gas theres like a gear grinding noise under the dash, some type of speed sensor maybe, i have no idea. anyone know what that might be? It would sure help me out with all these complaints i have. And also any of you have an ext cab that when you turn over a bump or some rough surface the rear doors make a crinkleing noise? just wondering. Oh yeah, i also get a little hesitation now and then taking off from a stop, i think that may also be the clutches in the diff, but maybe not. I should probably not be so picky, but its my first new truck and its made more weird noises than half the used vehicals i have had, and i havnt beat on it at all, well except the rear end from doing donuts and stuff in the rain. any info would be appreaciated. thanks guys

I don't understand either. I lubed mine with the old kit 4 yrs ago now and the clunk is still gone. 4 Years and no clunk! The Lube works.

From the comments of most people on here it will come right back. So no I dont really beleive that it is fixed. So your gonna tell me that they have known about this for years and cant make a better shaft? I love GM but you surely cannot defend that. I hope the lube works and all is great if it does but I am just saying in general about the problem.

The lube "fix" usually dosnt last. I made them replace the shaft and that worked fine. Its bull that they have not fully addressed this issue yet. You can bet if it start happening on my 05 heads are going to roll. This has been an issue way to long for GM not to have a better fix then lubing the shaft.

Ok let's talk about '06 models. Do they have the same infamous intermediate steering shaft, or did GM finally redesign it for the 06? I was under impresison that they fixed the piston slap, steering shaft clunk, as well as driveline clunk. So much for impressions, I guess.

Worked for me, going on 4 years. The kit comes with 2 tubes of lube. You must use both tubes, if you don't it's not gonna work for you.

Glad to here it worked for you, hope it continues to. Just seems like a bandaid to me. Why dont they just make a better shaft? The replacement one they put in my 03 HD worked just fine. It developed the steering cluck at under 3000 miles and i really babied that truck.
