Tune up help

Recommended Posts

Posted

I just bought an 03 Z71 Truck with 100,000 miles on it.

Where should I start with the maintenance and tuneup?

I want to change the plugs, wires, and fuel filter for sure.

I just put a K&N cold air intake on it.

What else should I look into doing?

Thanks for the help.

Definatly get those old fluids out and new ones in...also check into your brakes...

If this was a stock truck there is a good chance that the previous owner never replaced shocks...probably should take a look there too to see if they need replacement...

Let me know how you like that K&N I have been thinking about that for a long time now and just cant pull the trigger..

I do like the K&N cold air.

Where would I start to look for shocks. I know it needs those. This truck was actually my dad's work truck for 2 years. All he does is highway travel in it. I did put the Ford keys on the front to raise it up a bit. I noticed it does ride a little rougher now. But it needed shocks before I did that. What kind of shocks should I get?

My truck had 92k miles when I bought it. I replaced the shocks with Monroe Reflex. I don't do any off roading though. Lots of guys seem to like Edelbrock IAS performer and Bilsteins. Look at the previous posts, and there's shock poll, good reading.

I would agree with the fuel filter, PCV valve, plugs and wires, fluids for front/rear diff, transfer case and transmission, flush power steering and brake fluid (if you're energetic) and of course a front end lube.

Make sure you get the right fluids. For instance, My 2000 Z71 truck takes Autotrak II for the transfer case, it's about $5 a quart from the dealer. My rear diff is a non-locker and takes fluid from the dealer at about $25 qt. I know that's expensive, and a lot of guys use mobil 1 etc, but I figure if I only do it every 5 years or so, it's not that bad. Get a rear diff gasket while youre at the dealer too.

I'm not sure what years they quit having cabin air filters, but if you have one, I'll bet it needs to be changed too.

Also, check the u-joints. My front joint on the rear driveshaft started squeaking, so I changed both u-joints and the old ones were toast.

Enjoy the new truck!

An earlier post mentioned hoses. I heartily recommend that. When I ran my fleet, the only thing that killed engines was loss of lower rad hose causing a "dry" overtemp.
