Raised hood on new Silverado

This is strickly a curiosity question....

We just got a new 2006 Silverado 2500HD at work. What I have noticed is the design of the hood on the truck is raised up in the middle (a lot more than like an 03 Silverado 1500). Looking at it I don't really see a particular engineering reason that the hood is raised, engine does not sit up or anything.

So is it just a cosmetic thing? Or is there more of a reason in the design.?

Well anyhow I think it looks pretty cool!! :nono:

What model(s) (&/or year) trucks have this?

Yeah, the 01-02 Silverado 2500 HD's and 3500's had the "Power Dome" hood. I thought is was a mistake when they changed the front clip and eliminated it. Appearantly the design team at Cherolet did too. In my opinion it is a retro idea. If you look at the 69-72 Chevy/GMC hoods they have a "Power Dome" look to them. Every GM truck buff in the world knows that 67-72 was the best body style on a pickup ever, brand for brand, period.

There's no practical reason for the Power Dome hood. It's on there for looks. And if you ask me, it looks pretty cool.

2006 is the first year where the non-HD trucks got the PowerDome hood.

I don't know, the Tri-Five's, particularly the '57 was pretty awesome.

You've obviously never enjoyed the subtle beauty that is the '61 Studebaker.

Somebody told me that the power dome hood was used on the 2500and 3500 series trucks because the Duramax diesel needed extra clearance under the hood. So apparently it is functional on diesel pickups, and cosmetic on everything else.
