new guy with truck problems!

Hey guys!

New here, I own a 1997 chevy silverado 1500 with the 5.7. I have searched this site and the internet and i think I have figured out my problem but I just want to see if i can confirm this with you guys.

It only happens every so often but what happens is the instrument cluster go wacky, meaning the tach stops and the speedo doesn't work right. I also loose my sift position light and my check engine light comes on. and I seem to be stuck in third gear. I am also getting these codes.

1.) P0740

2.) P0753

3.) P0758

4.) P0785

5.) P1860

I am pretty sure the problem is the ignition switch but i want to be sure before i have it looked at. Is there a possibility that it could be the solenoid in the tranny??

Thanks for your help!!

Here are the codes the ECM is throwing. If the speedo and tach are erratic, plus these code, id say its the tranny.

1.) P0740-TCC Enable Solenoid Circuit Electrical

2.) P0753-1-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical

3.) P0758-2-3 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical

4.) P0785-3-2 Shift Solenoid Circuit Electrical

5.) P1860-TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Electrical (Torque Converter)

Condition

Some customers may comment on one or more of the following conditions:

• The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is ON.

• The transmission is defaulted to second gear (4L80/85-E).

• The transmission is defaulted to third gear (4L60/65-E).

• The instrument cluster is inoperative.

Upon investigation, one or all of the diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) P0740, P0753, P0758, P0785, P0787, P0973, P0976, P1860, P2761, P2764 and P2769 may be set depending on the vehicle.

Cause

The most likely cause of this condition may be a loss of voltage to the transmission solenoid power supply circuit.

This condition may also be the result of an incorrect installation of an aftermarket electronic device such as a remote starter or alarm system.

Correction

Important: If the vehicle is equipped with an aftermarket electronic device and the DTCs are being set when the device is being used, verify that the appropriate fuse is being supplied battery voltage during operation. If voltage is not present at this fuse, these DTCs will be set due to lack of voltage at the solenoids. This condition is most likely to occur with an incorrectly installed remote starting system. If this is the case, refer the customer to the installer of the system for corrections. ANY REPAIRS DUE TO AFTERMARKET INSTALLATION OF ACCESSORIES IS A NON-WARRANTABLE ITEM.

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, test for battery voltage at the circuit fuse in the transmission solenoid power supply circuit. Refer to the appropriate SI Document for the transmission solenoid power supply circuit information.

If battery voltage is present at the fuse, inspect the ignition voltage circuit between the fuse and the transmission for possible opens.

If battery voltage is not present at the fuse, test for continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch. If NO continuity is between the fuse and the ignition switch, repair the open in that circuit.

If you have continuity between the fuse and the ignition switch, the most likely cause is the ignition switch. Replace the ignition switch using the appropriate Ignition Switch Replacement procedure in SI. Refer to group number 2.188 of the parts catalog for part description and usage of the ignition switch.

Hey guys thanks for the info.

I wanted to also let you know that the first time the truck did this it was two months ago. It did it one day then it was fine for over a month. Then three weeks ago it did it again when i was 3 hours away from home. I was on the highway and would stop to shut the truck off to try and reset the thing, it would work at first but it seems as i kept driving shutting it off then restarting wouldn't help. It needed a few minutes of rest before it came out of it. then three weeks went by and it was fine again untill two days ago when i went out for lunch and stared it and she was doing it again. Then that was all it did for that day and things are back to normal now???!!

the other thing i forgot to mention is the aftermarke remote start i had a problem with. while i use the remote to start it a while back she burned out the fuse for the remote start and keyless entry. i mean the wires were black! I went back to the person who installed it and told him what was happening and he said that it has nothing to do with what was going on in the tranny. This was before i knew about the ignition switch. he also then told me that since my cruise/directional is all chewed up that might have something to do with it...(dog ate it)

I hope this might give me some more insite to what the problem is..

thanks guys

Hey guys,

just had my mechanic look at the truck. After he hooked it up to his computer it was not registering any codes. What he found was the neutral saftey switch is burnt up where it connects to the transmition. he is telling me that this might be causing the problem. I am going to replace this to see if it works but i have a feeling that the ignition switch is the problem. Have any of you ever heard of the neutral saftey switch causing problems?

thanks guys! :driving:
