DIC Question from New Member

:driving: I just bought a 2006 Silverado and have a question. One of the best parts of my previous truck was the trip computer that showed fuel economy, trip info, etc.

I noticed in the owner's manual that this was available on some models but mine only has the basic DIC. Is there a way to add the other features to the computer? If so, what is it? If not, what aftermarket device would you recommend?

I have read several of the previous posts about this matter but am still somewhat confused. I don't want to start replacing the steering wheel or anything drastic like rewiring a new truck. I just want the basic mileage and trip information from the peg. Any help you can provide will be appreciated. Thanks.

it is necessary to replace the steering wheel and the clockspring but that is it. and at that it is a relatively easy procedure, although i know the steering wheel scares people becasue of the air bag but it isn't that bad.

and then i think you have to take it to the dealer to have the BCM reprogrammed

Without the DIC buttons on the steering wheel, the trip computer and headlamp and alarm programmable features are not operational. Do not ask me why - this is really stupid if you ask me, as they call these DIC buttons "redundant radio controls", which is very misleading. The steering wheel button option (on LT1 and LT2) is only $ 125, but when you need to buy a new steering wheel, clockspring harness, and have it programmed, the cost will run quite high - around $ 500.

What if I just want basic features that can be performed with the instrument panel peg?

The cluster button allows you to read the trip odometer, reset the trip odometer, and rear the total engine hours. Nothing else. I do not know howyou could program more features into the system using the cluster selector/reset button. DIC button equipped steering wheel is the only way, I think.

Yes. You will be able to use the trip computer, to prgram the headlight delay. to program the automatic locks delay, and to program the response when the vehicle is locked/unlocked with the remote. If you get the Onstar, you can use one of the buttons on the steering wheel to operate it.

Hello everyone!

My name is Clay Sikes and this is my first post on the forum. I tried to start a new thread, but I guess that I have to have a post count of 5 before I can do that.

Anyway, I have a 2004 Silverado LS Extended cab 2WD. I have read through all of these forums for the past two weeks or so and decided to install the new steering wheel with buttons and the new clock spring harness. Everything seemed to go pretty smooth, but now I appear to have some type of an electrical problem. When the key is off and out, the battery light stays on and the PRND321 lights above the steering column stay on as well. Also, the truck doesn't want to start right away. It will crank and crank and then I need to completely remove the key from the ignition, let it set for a minute or two and then it will start.....shut it off and it does the same thing again. The truck was completely fine before I added the new harness and steering wheel. When it does start it runs fine. I haven't had the new codes applied to the instrument cluster yet so the radio buttons and the DIC don't work yet. Will the reset of the cluster fix the starting issue, or is there another way to reset the computer?

Thanks, Clay

Well, I figured it out. It turns out that the ignition switch was not in right. There is a little white gear at the top of the switch that was in the wrong position. Once I figured that out all was good. Now I just need to get the cluster programmed and I will be done.

In a Corvette you can program the DIC to display a message of your choice , and have asked a person who writes software for tuning if they could do it for the other DICs , they said yes it can be done but he will not do it because he has more important things to write code for .

Would love to be able to put a private message in the DIC dispaly .

I put a ScanGaugeII in my '06. Works slick as a whistle, especially since it displays up to 4 functions at a time whereas my SUV DIC can only display one at a time.
