Annoying rattle from the steering column

Hey guys,

 

I've got a 1999 Silverado, 5.3, 50K miles, 2WD. It's a great truck, HOWEVER:

 

I've got this very annoying rattle coming from around the steering column. It almost sounds like a plastic on metal rattle. Also, the steering column does have lots of vibration going over rough spots in the road. Not sure if they could be related. Any ideas on what I should check? It almost feels like something is loose in the steering system. I'm also wondering if possibly needing new struts/shocks could be the cause.

Completely normal, GM has no real solution to this, you can try lubing the intermediate steering shaft but the problem will return. Search for Steering intermediate shaft, you'll find more bable than you can shake a stick at.

Actually I bought the truck about 3 months ago and it had only 48k on it, now it's approaching 51K. It's only a matter of time till it becomes a "high miler"

Wow!! I wish I only had 51,000 miles. Mine's a 2003 with 97,000!

 

I just did the search on lubing the steering shaft because I'm also going to have to do this.
