I need help!! mY 2005 CHEVROLET 1500 z71 crew cab is the love of my life! However, I am having a minor problem, thats driving me nuts! The steering wheel seems to be bumpy, or jumping when I drive. I brought it to the dealer three times, and they cant figure it out! What else can I do? I am so confused. I would appreciate any advice...Chris

Steering shaft need to be greased/replaced. Common problem, do a search on intermediate steering shaft or the like.

Are there any known problems if this is left untreated?

I've searched and read the threads regarding the clunk, and talked with my service tech, and have determined that if I have it lubed, it will only do it again in a few months.

So why should I lube it if it's only going to happen again?

Not that I know of, but I never let it go because it gets so annoying. They issued a new TSB back in Feburary. I had mine replaced with the new shaft and have not had any further problems.

I just had the most recent part number installed, I'm currently in arbitration with GM to have the 300 buck install cost covered by them (I had had it replaced once in the past while under warranty, but that was with the former defective shaft). Hopefully this new part number will actually do the job. The new intermediate steering shaft part number is 19153614. Try to get GM to install it for you, let's hope it does the job. I was kind of disappointed that it took them so long to do a real fix for this one.

Just picked my '05 back up today, with a new imporved intermediate shaft installed. Service writer told me if it makes a noise again, even out of warrenty, bring it back, and they will replace it for free. not bad, glad to see GM getting thier heads out of the butts!

Hey! Did they finally issue a recall on it? I've greased mine tiwice, and it comes back in a few months. Never wanted to replace it, being a cheap a$$, when I didn't break it.

I believe this is happening on my 2000. At low speeds turning the wheel either way it makes a really bad clunking/grinding noise that you can feel/hear in the steering wheel. But it doesnt happen all the time so im not sure if its the steering shaft or something else in the front end. It just started happening and I havent done anything out of the ordinary.

I dont have a warrenty or anything on the vehicle so since this is a problem with all our trucks will GM pay for anything or am I stuck forking out all the money for this???
