Truck won't idle

Recommended Posts

I drove the truck yesterday and it ran perfectly. This afternoon I crank it up and it immediately choked down. It did this a couple of times. It has never done this before. I Drove it to the dealer by keeping it reved up a little when I came to stop lights. It runs fine, just won't idle. When I got to the dealership it still wouldn't idle. A mechanic looked at it and couldn't make it idle either. He said he would have to keep it and hook it up to the computer tomorrow. When he cranked it up to drive it off he called me over and it was idling fine. He said it must be a sensor. They are checking it tomorrow and will let me know. I have 38,000 miles on it so it is out of warranty, but they said they would try to help me anyway.

Anyone know what might be wrong or how much it might cost?

Thanks for any help.

I always tell my customers (and Techs who call) think spark, fuel, and air in a naturally aspirated gasoline engine.

Not keeping these items in check usually precipitates engine controls and sensors to run out of range and subsequently fail.

Notwithstanding I have seen both MAF (Mass Air Flow) sensors and coolant temp sensors cause the driveability problem which you are experiencing; insufficient air to go along with the fuel delivered, which is why you need to hold the throttle plate open in order to keep the engine running.

A keen Tech should be able to pinpoint the problem easily, and it sounds as if the Dealer will take care of you. If they charge an hour and a small part I wouldn't be too upset.

Please let us know how you make out, it will be interesting to see.

Have a great one.
