rear end shaking when braking

Recommended Posts

if anyone has a clue....when I apply the brake on my 98 Z-71, the back end starts vibrating real bad. I have had the brakes checked, but they are fine. The opinion of one mechanic was that a hub was warped. However, I would think that the warped hub would show an unusual wear on the brake shoes. I would appreciate any suggestions.

If your truck has rear disc brakes the rear rotors can go out-of-round, this will cause a shake when braking. If it has drum brakes one or both of the drums could be out-of-round as well. someone with a brake lathe can true them up to make them round again, they will know when cutting them if they are distorted by the cutters contact area on the surface. a bent wheel or backing plate could also cause a shake but I would suspect the drums first.

The '98's are rear drum. You can isolate which

axle is giving you trouble by applying the parking brake

while going down the road. Find a straight road with nobody behind you, and with your left hand on the parking brake release handle, gentle and slowly apply the parking brake with your left foot.If a vibration is felt, the brake problem is in the rear of your truck. If it does not, then it is in the front.

Please let us know.

Have a great one!

Don't forget spring bushings, U bolts, universals, etc.

and shocks too....  (if one or both rear shocks are worn out it could cause some wheel hop)

It may be as simple as a busted belt in one of your tires. The thing I would do is rotate one tire at a time and see if the problem moves to the front if so replace the tire.

Good luck and please post what you finally find out. As I have a 98 Z71 myself and am interested in case it happens to me.
