3rd wire on RCA cables

I have inherited a set of R/F RCA cables. They are a twisted/shielded and appear to be of great quality. I am confused to find there is a small add on lead that is approx. 18 guage attached to the casing. I was thinking this would be a remote on? On the other hand I was always told to run the power/accessory wire separate to avoid interferance. Any Ideas?

remote turn on for amp . running the turn on lead is fine since the voltage it carries is usually so low that it won't interfere with the signal.

Of course, if you're building a competition system, that little bit might be an issue, but very few of us will ever push spl or dB's high enough to notice that little bit.

that being said, however, it is important to try and run the RCA cables on the opposite side of the car from teh main amplifier power wire. that one carries alot of alternator noise.
