Oil Filter - PF58 or 59

Found a store that's blowing out its ACDelco PF58 oil filters for cheap; $2.00 each. I know the manual calls for the PF59 model, but I seem to recall reading here that the PF58 is also ok, since the only difference is that the 59 has an anti-drainback feature, but that feature isn't significant on the LM7 engine (5.3L) since the oil filter hangs down, and so oil can't drain back anyhow.

So, is it correct that the anti-drainback isn't needed, and so the PF58 is as good as the PF59?

I got a dozen PF59's which will take me through the warranty period, but if the 58's are ok I figure I'll start using them thereater.  Good plan?

How is any oil going to drain out of the filter with the engine shut off? With the filter hanging down, I don't see where it make a difference.

I am not sure how the oil drains out but GM did change from the PF 58 to the PF 59 so there has to something to this. Just my thoughts.

even if i had to pay the extra i would use the PF59.  I got lucky a year ago when walmart had a blowout sale and i got 12 filters at 50 cents each.  I still have about 6 or 7.

those are some nice pics todddd41, especially the ones in the snow....

Oh yeah, stick with the 59. I agree GM wouldn't have changed without a reason. PF59 and Purolator's are the only filters that will ever touch my truck.

I'd stick with the PF59, since that is what was qualified in the vehicle.  I wouldn't want to risk engine damage to an inexpensive part.

Thanks Fennsz!! Playing in the snow was a blast, I just wish I would have had another rig along, so I could have really attacked some of the hills.

Personally, I don't get into researching the filter too closely, I use what the book at the parts store calls for. I either use the new Purolater with the shiny blue paint (can't remember the name), or the Fram ToughGaurd, which is supposed to have more filtering ability than the regular one.

Less of it drains out of the block and back into the filter.  I changed my oil yesterday and a lot of oil poured out of the block after I removed the filter.

I have heard the same thing as Nick99Chevy found and that is that the check valve isn't to keep the oil from draining out of the filter but it keeps the oil from draining out of the block above the filter.

Actually the check-valve stops the oil filter from draining.  If the filter drains it must be filled before oil is pumped to the engine which means the engine is running for a little while without oil pumping.  Whatever you do don't use Fram's normal filter it is super crappy.  It has no check-valve either.
