2002 Tahoe - Lifter Tick

Recommended Posts

Just had it's 1st oil change at 4K miles. After they chaned the oil and brought the truck home, I noticed a tapping noise from the engine. Left the truck running and opened the hood.

Passenger side I hear the typical sounds of lifter tick on the passenger side. 4K miles.... WTF?? This truck is NEW! And it's not quiet... it sounds like a diesel.

Brought it to the dealer and they said they just got a tech bulletin regarding the lifter tick. Does anyone have a copy of it?

Also, anyone else expereincing this?

Yep. All the time. Going in Tuesday. I'll try and get a copy of the tech bulletin and put it up here, but they don't usually like to give it out.

All the bulletin says is that it's "Normal" engine sound. No fix for it.

One way to get rid of the sound is to put some foam around (I used the foam they pack Harddrives in) and put that in the boot around the steering shaft as it exits the cab. The exit point is just above the brake pedal.

It blocks out the sound.

Mine's been doing it from day one. Just a "characteristic" of these engines.

Gotta love it!!

Jeepster,

This is the kinda crap, that prevents me from buying new.

Go in there and tell them that this is totally unacepptable.

4000 miles, and a lifter starts to tick, give me a break.

Normal engine sound? Sounds to me that if Chev had to fix all these normal engine sounds there might not be a chev anymore.

Why is that we all put up with this?

Are you sure it's not the infamous piston slap?  Almost all of the new GenIII's have it, and yes I think my 01 Tahoe has it as there is a slight tap/knock at cold start that goes away when warm and GM's tech bullitens have up to now said it is "normal" and there is no fix.

Because you have to period.  GM is there to make money, few people actually notice all the #### thats wrong with their vehicles anyways.  why waste money on r+d when you find out the problem later, put a cheap fix to make consumers happy and that works 9/10's of the time.

Sorry it took so long to get back, I spent a few nights in the locker because when service showed me "No Fix Available" well I went a little ballistic.  :P

So at 60001 miles when it decides that it doesn't wanna play anymore, it'll just seize.

I'm going to keep bringing it in, because lifter tick or piston slap means it's not working right. Something is out of spec. If one does it, it means they all the lifters should do it. And that's not the case.

And I see I'm not the only one experiencing this either.

What did I get myself into?
