To switch back and forth from synthetic?

I have my 01 silverado, been using Dino oil, but have some castrol syntec that we have to get rid of, was wondering if I can use that on my next oil change and then go back to regular oil and be ok, with doing anything to the engine. The truck has about 80,000 miles on it. The reason I dont want to use castrol syntec on the new truck is because I want to start using Mobil 1 in it.

I always use one tpe of oil just because, but I would think it would be better to rotate between brands, what one oil may deposit another may clean away. And one seal material may like one brand where another seal may perform better with another. I don't have any documentation of it but it makes good sense in my head.

Just remember, Synthetic oil cleans better than dino. This could open up deposits keeping you from having a leak. With the new formulations in both dino and syn, you should be okay to go back and forth if need be.

You won't harm a thing inside your engine by swapping back and forth.. Just don't mix the two together half and half and you'll be alright. The only "bad" thing that may come of it is that when you pour in your synthetic for a couple of changes it'll clean up all the sludge and deposits that the old dino left behind and if any of that sludge was sealing up a leak.... well, you'll find out if you have any leaks....

Well I wil probably use the castrol syntec then, since we have it and got to use it, dont really want to throw money away. Probably will use the castrol syntec and then the regular dino oil, Mobil 1 clean 5000. I am planing to use regular Mobil 1 in the new truck since you can get it cheaper than castrol syntec.

Switching back and forth will not hurt a thing, like stated above just don't mix. Remember that Mobil Extended Performance is the only full synthetic. Their Clean 5000 and High Mileage are regular stock oil's. Their 7500 mile oil is a synthetic blend. I know a few get confused and think just because it is Mobil that it is a synthetic. Not sure about their new SAE 0w-20 but their Turbo Diesel tuck oil I think is full synthetic the SAE 5w-40 oil.

Yeah I know, I have been using Mobil 1 Clean 5000 before in my truck anyway. Just wanted to use the castrol syntec up.

While I agree that synthetics are probably better, I have yet to see a case where dino wasn't absolutely awesome. AWESOME.

I have never taken a modern engine apart and seen sludge or any other build up, of any kind. Switch to synthetic if you wish and you will have great results.

Bottom line. Any approved oil will give great results. Use whatever products that help you enjoy your truck. I love my old (2000) Silverado and enjoy driving it every day.

It always amazes me to take a 150,000 mile engine apart and still see factory angled hone marks on the cylinders. Even on dino.

You're right ken, the only real difference is change intervals and higher flash points with synthetic. If on dino, I wouldn't run past 3,000. You COULD run longer but, I'm the kinda guy that likes to keep his oil clean so 3,000 it is if running dino. I'll run Mobil 1 7,500 - 10,000 miles depending on how the vehicle was driven and the filter used.

I agree with Ken also.

Although I run Mobil1 5W-30 in my truck,My "beater" '88 Corsica has had nothing but "dino" Pennzoil 5W-30 in it from day one (My dad bought it new in Feb.'88)

The valve covers, intake or oil pan have never been off of the car and it dosen't really burn any oil at all,I change it every 3,000 miles and its maybe 1/2 qt. low,if that, when I go to change it.

Basically what I'm trying to say is that I'm not sold on synthetic oil helping an engine last longer than if you would use "dino' oil,All my dads cars are high mileage cars with over 100 grand on the clocks using nothing but Pennzoil "dino" oil.

Yeah, as long as you take care of it, change it at 3,000 or sooner and don't drive it like you stole it it'll last a long time no matter what you use. Some of us just prefer being able to go 7,500-10,000 miles without having to change the oil.

quick question, for curiosity purpose. what happens when you mix "dino" oil and synthetic?

Yeah, what does happen? I have a quart of 'mystery mix' that consists of dino and Mobil1 that I put together from all the quart bottles draining out. Yes, I am one cheap ba$tard! Recently I have been using it for my homebrew bicycle chain lube, but what about throwing it in the car?

BTW, my '96 Cavy 2.4L has 140K, no problems on dino oil changed every 5K miles.
