Recommended Posts

Im looking at buying a 2000 GMC 1500 regular cab 4x4 with the 5.3 and auto tranny and Im wondering if there is any trouble spots I should be looking for when I take a look at it and take it for a test drive. It has 98000 km on it, K&N drop in and a single 3" into dual 2.5" raven exhaust otherwise stock and has all maintenance records apparently. Thanks guys.

Check for the slip yoke clunk (you'll feel it clunk when you take off from a stop)

Check for the fuel guage to be operating properly

Check for steering shaft clunking

Make sure there is fluid in the Transfer Case and that it has not all leaked out from a faulty output shaft seal or bad transfer case drain plug

Make sure the G-80 Rear Diff is working properly

And

Replace the burned out Day time running lights :)

Please explain the cause of slip yoke clunk and the consequences of ignoring it.

Slip Yoke clunk is a result of poor engineering and quality control on the part of GM. They fixed the problem by comming out with a better designed nickle plated slip yoke some years later. You'll notice when you take off from a stop or are driving very slowly and then accelerate a "clunk" or "Bump" and you will hear it. Solution is to have a nickle plated slip yoke put in. I'll be having it done on my truck soon. It is one of the most common problems on the 4X4 99+ GM trucks

I believe in 2003 is when GM fixed this issue
