Loose steering column

I've had my truck for about 6 months now and up until now i've had my fingers crossed that this wouldn't happen. The steering column all of a sudden got to where it will move left and up if you apply force in that direction, and the piece where the signal arm and ignition switch is will rotate almost an inch. I know this is a pretty common problem with these truck because i've driven a lot of them that were like this at work. Does anyone know what causes this and possibly how to fix it. if you could help or point me in the right direction i would appreciate it because this is driving me nuts.

This is not the steering shaft issue that is so common with these trucks it sounds like either you or someone who owned the truck before you likes to grab onto the wheel before getting out of your truck because it sounds like the steering column is what the problem is.The shaft issue does not make the column loose, it only puts a vibration that you can feel up thru the steering wheel when going over bumps or cracks in the road especially when turning.

Sounds like there are some piece in the column it self that have worn out and need replacing.I had that happen on my s10 and it was because i use to grab onto the top of the steering wheel when getting out and it wore it out.

This probably is the issue. I don't grab onto it, but i think to guy who owned it prior to me was an older gentleman. i assume that they would have used it to climb in and out. i'll have to tear it down and investigate this weekend.

Look for a snapped or loosened bracket or slider clip that holds the column to the underside of the dash. If it is a tilt column, check that the tilt mechanism is tight. I have had several that have broken from being pulled on when getting in and out of the truck.
