Cracked Transfer Case

Recommended Posts

My wife came home from having her 2003 GMC Yuon Denali XLT serviced. After the oil change and routine maintenance, the Service Tech told her she had a cracked transfer case, but they did not do it! This vehicle has about 52,000 miles, never driven off road and is far from being abused since we purchased it new.

I know nothing about transfer cases and before I go to the dealership, I was hoping some members could provide me with some insight or useful tips on what I should be looking for, or what I should be asking the dealer prior to opening my wallet.

Any help is appreciated!

I would take a look and see for myself. If you had a cracked transfer case you would have heard noise coming from it as it blew apart due to fluid leaking out. Have you noticed any fluid coming out or ever seen any wet spot but didn't know what it was? Make sure it isn't a weld line or a scratch/scrape that is msconceived as a crack.

I had mine replaced under warranty, It had a crack around the rear yoke seal I believe is the name of it. Anyways I never noticed the just kept changing the rear seals because they would see the leak. After 3 seals someone finally noticed. Anyways hope you have warranty I know it's not cheap. I will comment that I ended up having to replace the seal on the t case a year later out of warranty. which wasn't that cheap either.

My brother had this problem with a 2003 Dodge ram. the dealer replaced 2 t-cases and both u-joints on the driveshaft. He bought the third when his warranty ran out. turned out his drive shaft was out of balance, but his truck has been offroad. Hope this helps.

Yeah, drive shaft out of balance is the thing I can thing of that would cause this. T-cases are very strong so if you snap one just by the way you are driving then you have a major problem. I'd say it's either been hit by something or your driveshaft is out of balance.

The new GM t cases suck, big time. The newer ones are aluminum, any real off roader will tell you that. There is no way you can compare todays t cases to a np205. You should not be breaking that case unless your beating it. I had cracked mine, but off road like its going out of style. You may also want to check if you drive at high speeds in 4 high. That will heat the case up and crack it. Not common though, but it has happened. If infact it is cracked, you should see fluid everywhere, maybe not on the ground but covering the whole case. Fix it before it gets worse!!
