IS THAT EVEN POSSIBLE

Hi everyone I would like to know if its possible to put Nav system in a 02 if so what do I need to make it a reality I know I have to replace the dash face and

temp controls but im not sure what needs to be rewired

Strictly as far a mounting, its much more inloved than just the dash face. The entire insde of the dash and all the mounting points are different. Even if it is possible, all the parts required would easliy triple the cost of an aftermarket unit. So it would be MUCH easier and much cheaper to install an aftermarket nav system such as pioneer or alpine, or such.

i like my hand held better. it wont give me directions like tom tom but i can take it on my bike, on the boat ,on a hike, to the deer stand ect...about 300 total after add ons like 3 sd cards the maping cd ect. and a mount for the truck and boat.

my cousin hates the nav in his MDX it's 5 years out of date and acura wants about 500 to update the system with stuff new resturants ect...

At one time, my intent was to install the Nav in a 2001. I ended up buying a 2003. It can be done, it's just that it would be hard. Electronically speaking, the radio would need to be able to talk to something via the Class II serial data bus that makes it think it's in an 03-06 vehicle. I work with electronics and vehicle serial communications (for somebody other than GM) and a "box" could be built that does this very thing. It's just that the builder would have to know the specifics of the data interface (which I doubt are available). One guy mentions a "keep-alive" box they have where he works that is exactly what I am talking about:

Once you had such a device that let the radio function normally, then you would have to deal with the completely different amp/speaker wiring and dash format of the pre-03s vs. the 03-06s.

I thought one time about trying to design one of these "keep-alive" devices. I searched the web extensively, but could never find any specs for the Class II serial bus. If anyone has any related info, please let me know -- I still might give it a go.

I dont think that will help unfortuantly.

the problem isnt the mismatched harnesses. The problem is the underlying databus/netowrk communication that the 03+ radios/nav radios use. It does not exist in the correct form in the 2001-2002 trucks. There is no real PMM (power mode master) signal on the Class II data bus in 2001-2002 trucks, so likely if you hooked up a 03+ radio, it woudlnt even turn on.

CAN and Class II are different databusses with different operating characteristics. Class II operates in a star network pattern with one wire held at 5 volts nominal (or is it 7 volts?). It is otherwise known as J1850 VPW.

CAN on the other hand uses two wires (a high and low) terminated at the ends by a 120ohm resistor. Honestly I think the easiest way to do this is two run a secondary 03+ BCM right along side the 2001-2002 BCM. I have a box like this half built and it works on the bench, but I need to test it in a 2001-2002 vehicle. Unfrotuntly its not THAT high on my priority list to get this box completed because I have an '05 truck. It will get done at some point tho :chill:

You cant use the 03+ climate controls. The connector and wiring are different. You need the radio/hvac mounting bucket from an 03+ truck/suv. You'll also need to make a 3/4" spacer for the mounting tabs of the HVAC controls.

The picture below shows the bucket and where it needs to be trimmed to work in a 99-02

You'll also need the Metra 99-2003 installation kit to mount the new headuni:

And you'll need a 03+ dash bezel. I picked up a Denali one.

So you keep the 01 AC controls, just relocate them? How do they look with the 03+ dash opening (because I know the AC opening is smaller on the 03 trucks)?
