02 Z71 Tahoe Power steering failure

Driving today and was do a tight turn in a parking lot (Highest Pump pressure) and the power steering stopped without warning.

Was nearly impossible to drive it to the dealer (no need to go to the gym today). Dealer diagnosed a siezed pump and is replacing it for $280.

Anyone else ever see a power steering pump simply sieze without warning?

Truck has 52K miles on it.

9 times out of 10, when they go they go without any warning.  The other 1 time is going to be bearing noise

The pump on my 01 Yukon broke @ 46365 miles total cost of repair @ the dealership was $713.21 (GM pump, fluid, labor and 1 day rent-a car) I'm glad Ihad the ex.warranty.

Im curious as to weather or not your brakes failed at the same time. I had this happen to me in the dead of winter about 20 miles into the bush. Turned out to be the steering pump shaft, lost all hydraulics. That was a tough drive out considering we were in the mountains. GM had a recall for this problem and took care of the repair, you may want to call GM and see if your truck was on the list for the recall, and get reimbursed.

Brakes were fine. I know that some GM PS pumps are linked to the hydroboost brakes but not on a 1/2 ton.

I will search for a recall on the power steering?

Thanks for the heads up. I will say it was odd that the dealer quoted me over $800 for this repair but said they would do a split repair. They claimed to haved bought the new pump and only charged me labor.

Why are they buying the pump?

can someone with a 2006 GMT 800 tell me what there Power steering pump looks like? Specifically, what color is the resevoir and what does the symbol look like on the filler cap?

If you have a picture that would be great. My new pump is zinc dichromate which looks like polished steel. My old pump was painted black. the new pump has a picture of a steering wheel on it and wavt lines that represent fluid, my old one has nothing on it.

I am just curious if I got an OEM pump or some knockoff aftermarket pump. I thought dealers had to use Genuine GM parts?

Just curious.

Thanks,
