Breaks and rotor question for a 01 NBS

I need to replace the breaks on my 01 NBS GMC ext cab truck. I've pretty much settled on the Hawk pads and have stainless lines for the front. I have a couple of questions:

1. How hard is it to change the rotors to the slotted type? Is it a pull off and put on change out or does it require changeing and repacking the bearings?

2. I was told that I need to have a computer that will bleed the breaks and is needed to compress the calipers for the new pads. The old block and c clamp method will screw up the ABS. Is this true.

3. The truck has 85k miles on the original fluid, knowing I need to flush it is it better to replace it with synthetic?

Thanks in advance,

Larry

Answer:

1 Pull old one off and put new one on. No bearing repacking needed.

2 I bleed mine with a hand held vacume pump. I've never needed a computer to do it. I use the block and c clamp to compress the pistion. Ive got 153 thousand on mine no ABS probs.

3 It wouldn't hurt as long as it's DOT 3 or 4.

I been checking into those Hawk pads also. How expensive are they? And what about the stainless lines? Did you get them locally from a mom and pop store(the kiind I usually go to) or from a nationwide retailer like advance auto parts or pep boys or something? Keep us posted on how those Hawk pads work out for you to.

I found the Hawk pads for about $120 for the front and rear from thunder racing here locally. I'm still debating on the rotor swap. I got the stainless lines from Thunder racing last year when they ran a special. You can order from their site and are a top class operation.

Thanks for the help,

Larry

The bearing are not repackable. They are a factory lubed and sealed bearing. Wait till you price a new one.

I would replace the rotors. The factory brakes are good, long lasting, hard pads. One of the benifets is you don't get much brake dust on the front rims, unlike fords. One of the drawbacks is it wears the rotors a little quicker.

Price having your old rotors turned vs new (cast iron) ones. I bet you will go new.
