Power Steering Hum

Recommended Posts

Posted

Once in a while, my power steering will hum at low engine rpm's when I turn. The pump, box and lines have no leaks and the fluid is at the proper level.

Question: What is about to fail, the pump or box and will a little hum last a while or will something fail quickly?

The hum does not bother me and it is just spuradic, not all the time. While I am a maintenace freak, with this issue, I feel that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". If I have a power steering failure though, which would it be?

Mine has been doing this for about 18 mos. It feels like a low fluid sensation but the level is fine and there are no leaks. It primarily happens when turning to the left. I suspect is the actuator valve in the pump but until it fails, I plan to just deal with the noise and weird vibration. I believe you can change the actuator valve but you have to pull the pump.

Thanks for the response. Harvest is right around the corner and I did not want something to "grenade" during the busy season. Sounds like it will run just fine for a while.

I think I will wait until failure, then procede.

Thanks again!
