tailgate cap replacement

Recommended Posts

Just ordered a Undercover tonneau for my 01 Silverado SB and read that the stock tailgate cap needs to come off and replaced with one that does not extend over the top. I pulled off the original cap after removing the 4 torx screws. Now I am faced with either putting in some kind of plug (painted screws?) in the tailgate screw holes or hopefully finding a cap that extends down far enough to utilize the torx screws. IF you have a suggestion for a cap or a solution for the screw holes please let me know.

Thanks

their should be some kind of plastic chrome or diamond plate trim that could be added.

a good trim shop could even make a alluminum or stainless piece to fit. haveing the scres makes it even better no need for a bunch of tape.

You can get a genuine GM tailgate cap from any GM dealer. These are standard on 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. They do not use screws, but 3M tape to hold the cap on. The screw holes will be covered by the cap.

Most truck accessory stores also carry aftermarket caps like that - in fact I inquired about this myself because I thought about buying a topper for my truck. If you mout a topper on it, you must also replace the finned original tailgate cap. They carry it. The price is about the same for both GM and aftermarket versions: about $ 30.

I too just bought the Undercover ($605.00 free shipping) for my '06 Silverado and bought a Wade tailgate cap for $25.00 shipped off of ebay, installed it yesterday and now all I need is delivery of my Undercover :bs:

Sounds like just what I need. My tailgate screw holes are fitted with what looks like a pop-rivet nut or clinch nut. Do I need to grind them off to fit the cap? PS my tonneau is due here tomorrow! :D
