playing around with my Z71 with the key off, I could push the trip reset button and the milage would appear. If i held the button a "hr 138.5" would appear. at first i thought is was an hour meter but after a 3 hour drive it still said 138.5. any ideas???

its the engine hour meter..  not how long you drive...  engine hours are measure different that time or mileage...

you can drive a long time and not reach a full hour on the hour meter

It is my understanding that the hour meter represents the hours that the engine has spent running. It allows those fleet and commercial operators who often operate in stop-and-go traffic or leave their engines idling for extensive periods of time to calculate a more precise servicing schedule.

As long as the engine was running for the entire 3 hours trip, then it should have logged three hours run time.

I drove for an hour and a half straight for 2 times and the hour meter didn't add a single 10th. This is why I wonder if it's an hour meter or not.

Its for sure an hour meter.. Why else would that advertise it as that? Must be some kinda glitch in yours.. Mine works fine :)

Maybe they work more like "Tach hours", as in small aircraft.

If you fly a Cessna 172 for 1.0 hrs on the Hobbs meter, which runs off oil pressure, you usually log around .6 or .7 on the tach. The 172 engine (Lycoming O-320) fetches up at 2700 rpm, with a 2300 or so rpm cruise. Your 5.3 fetches up at 5000 rpm, but at 70 mph your only turning around 1900 rpm.

Just a thought.

Have a great one!
