2006 Z-71 Transfer Case

Hey everyone! This is my first post here. Love the board...lots of great info! Anyways my question is this. I have a brand new 2006 Silverado Z-71 Ext. Cab. I just picked it up this past Saturday and last night I finally had a chance to look over the entire truck and make sure everything works.

One of my tests was to engage 4-Hi and 4-Lo to make sure it worked. Going into 4-Hi worked great. When I hit the 4-Lo button there was a rather loud metal clanking sound that came from the transfer case. Then when I put it back to 4-Hi there was another metal clanking sound.

Is this normal? I've never actually been in a newer GM truck while 4-Lo has been engaged. I have the push button automatic transfer case. Not sure if this normal for the newer transfer cases. I'm used to the older (80's and early 90's) manual transfer cases and I've never heard any noises like this when engaging 4-Lo.

I had the truck in neutral. I read the manual and it said the preferred method for engaging 4-Lo is to be in neutral and have the truck moving slowly forward at about 1-3 MPH. I tried engaging 4-Lo while stopped and while slowing rolling the truck forward and both made the same noise.

Again 4-Hi engaged perfect with no noise at all.

Just wanted to check and see if this is something I should have the stealership take a look at.

Thanks for any advice you can give!!

I have a 2003 and my dad has a 2003 and both of our do the same thing going to 4 Lo. Also, we have an 02 that does that same so I guess they all do it. I don't think I would worry about it.

My '06 does not make any sound at all. It shifts so smoothly and quietly that you wouldn't even know it shifted if it wasn't for the light on the dash. However, I do have the manual floor shifter. I will say that all of the previous trucks I've owned that had the electronic t-cases did make a clanging noise when shifting. I think it's just a normal thing with the electic motors that shift the t-case for you.
