2003 8.1L burb oil consumption and knock

Just bought this about 3 weeks ago and I started noticing a noise underneath the car about 1 week ago. It has a Borla exhaust on it so I just thought it was a exhaust leak. Now after reading around it looks like the dreaded piston slap. Also I checked the oil and its down a quart from when I got it(about 400 miles). Has anyone been able to reduce this with synthetics? I think I got screwed not happy.

If you DON'T have piston slap, you got lucky!

 

My '02 had it when I bought it and it has not gotten any worse.

Not much you can do about it because of the way the engine was designed.

Piston slap should quiet down after a minute or so.

 

I also have a noise down low in the engine.

Sort of a loud clicking or clatter that does not go away.

 

Your oil consumption could be caused by a bad intake manifold gasket.

This is a common problem area with the big blocks.

Get a new gasket and also ask about revised intake manifold bolts.

I don't think synthetics help and may even use more oil. I switched back to regular oil and my consumption seems less. I did not replace the intake gaskets. I just tighten the bolts about every six months. Some say that the gasket replacement and new bolts don't help. You could try a dose or two of Mystery oil and a short oil change interval to see if the noise clears up.

Condition

Some customers may comment about higher than expected oil consumption. Because this type of engine is used under various load conditions, the dealer should verify that the vehicle is using more than 0.946L (1 quart) of oil for every 379L (100 gallons) of fuel used.

Cause

Oil vapor pulled into combustion chamber through the intake manifold may cause this condition.

Correction

Replace all the intake manifold bolts. Replace one bolt at a time in sequence to keep the intake manifold from shifting.

 

Notice

Ensure the intake manifold does not shift as the intake manifold bolts are tightened in the proper sequence. Failure to follow the entire intake manifold bolt tightening sequence exactly may result in an oil leak and serious engine damage.

 

In the order shown below, remove each bolt and replace with a new bolt. Insert the new bolt and tighten to 5 N·m (44 lb in). Then move to the next bolt in sequence until all bolts have been replaced.

 

After all of the bolts have been replaced, tighten each bolt in sequence to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

Tighten all bolts in sequence to a final torque of 12 N·m (106 lb in).

Hi,

 

Check out previous 8.1 oil consumptions regarding re-doing the pcv valve (stan-pipe)the 8.1 has no external pcv valve. removing the intake and tack welding a upwards stan-pipe will eliminate this problem.....do a search to learn more. I have a new 8.1 and will be in those tracks if applicable.Hope this helps.

p.s....replacing the intake bolts is like retorquing an existing problem,why not just fill it with fix-a-flat! Do the search like we did and see what the prob is, it's a breather problem below the intake .Again do a Search..If no help let us know..ok?

Hey I have been running Mobil 1 10 30 and have run injector cleaner a bunch of times(Techron). My oil consumption is only 1/2 qt in almost 3k miles and the noise has gotten less. Just wanted to share, but the oil consumption is definetly better.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
