Hi all hopefully someone can lead me in the right direction. i have an 1984 sierra with a 305 bolted up to the 700r4. The truck starts ticking when i put it in gear and am stopped. I accelerate and i cant hear it anymore, then hit a light and starts tickin again. I put the truck in park or neutral and no noise. Also the noise is bafflin me-it dont really sound like valve train and defn not a knock. Truck is running good too. One last thing-is this normal-set timing at 6 degrees like my emmissions label says then plugged the vacumn back on and so on and checked timing again and it went to like 13 or 12? any help much appreciated

Could be a cracked flexplate (flywheel).  They'll often make the most noise on startup or shutdown.

i was thinking it could be a shield or yeah something like that. The only thing is that it does it only when im in gear and stopped. it doesnt matter if im starting or the temp but as soon as i go in gear yeahs. Thankyou much i will take a better look tomorow

Flyweels are like that. Somes they'll only make noise on start or when shut off or under certain other conditions.

k just took her out for a burn and yeah it does seem like it's the flywheel or somewhere around that area anyways. Thanks alot for the help bro. Just one last question-if the problem is the flywheel do you think i have a little bit of time to fix it or it should be like fix tomorow type of thing? again thankyous much

I have no idea of the level of damage to the flywheel or how long it could be before total failure. What happens is that the center breaks out and then the flywheel is no longer secured to the crankshaft. Once you shut it off, it won't restart because the flywheel won't turn the crank. If it happens while driving, the engine will run but you won't go anywhere.

I wouldn't wait long if this is the problem.
