oil filters

Picked up some Mobil 1 for an oil change and was about to get the 46 filter when I asked the parts guy what else was listed for my 02 2500HD 6.0. He showed the usual $4 or $5 filters and scrolled to a Mobil 1 filter for $12. I looked at it and it is a larger filter. I thought about the $12 cost for a second and figured since I have no problem paying for Mobil 1 oil I would go ahead and get it. Roughly $40 for oil and filter changed every 6,000 miles is about $.007 per mile. Is it worth it to you for better engine protection? I think it is for me. Any opinions on the Mobil 1 filter?

I use Napa Gold (wix) filters and am happy with them. If it makes you feel more at ease, it is always worth the few extra dollars. Does it need it????I would say no, but it's your money and if it makes you happy, go for it.

I run the mobil 1 filter on my 2000 5.3l GMC - $9.99 at the local auto parts store.

Personally, there may not be that much of a difference between that and the Fram, but what the hell

The EaO64 AMSOIL filter fits your truck. It lists for $15.10 or wholesale for $11.10. It is getting great reviews on BITOG site in the used oil analysis section. It also is constructed to go the distance on extended oil drain.

I guess as long as your not using a Fram filter, you're good to go.

You should see this: http://minimopar.knizefamily.net/oilfilterstudy.html

I must agree, Fram = BAD!!!

Me and one of the guys in our shop cut apart an AC Delco filter and a Fram filter for our trucks and boy were we surprised. The AC Delco filter had lots of paper element and seemed like it was constructed fairly well; the Fram looked like they forgot half the paper...big spaces, thin filter element, wtf?

Anyway, I run Mobil 1 and the AC Delco long filter, I think its #59 and #51 is shorter. It all treats me well...I even got the Mobil 1 decal and oil fill cap that's usually for Corvettes, looks nice.

Wow I got way off topic. :)

While I agree that the Fram (Orange) filters are of very poor quality, I use the Fram Tough Guard (gray/black) in my Toyotas (but I use Baldwin for the Duramax). FWIW, the oil stays visibly clear with the Fram TG filters, and they have very high single/multi-pass filtration ratings. (For comparison, I ran a genuine Toyota filter and the oil looked horrible after 2k miles.)

**NOTE** I said "FWIW" as far as judging how clean oil is by clarity, but it makes me feel so much better if it stays clear.

Naturally, there may be some trade-off in flow rates to get the good filtration but I'm assuming that changing the filter out every 5k miles and having a reasonably clean engine means it won't be a problem.

(Also, I'm NOT refering to the Fram PTFE black filters, which I wouldn't use either.)

I have not heard anything bad about A/C delco filters. The oil filter study that was done a few years ago come to mind. I'm fine using them for oil, fuel and air and have had no problems.

Incidentally, went through 5 A/C delco fuel filters this summer for my dmax, so they do work. I suspect I got contaminated fuel at a Pilot outside of Fargo. A real pita. Changed the "last" fuel filter on the Dalton hiway, on my way home from the arctic ocean, and that one took me and my camping trailer all the way back to NH..

If it works, don't fix it. A/C delco gets my vote for filters.

If you want a longer filter you can use the EaO 30 instead of the EaO 64. I'm using the EaO 30 on my truck and it fits just fine.

I have been using AC Delco filters on my trucks since 99, and yes they are good filters for the price. However the larger PF59 has now been replaced with the much smaller PF46 that I don't care to use. I think I am going to give the Napa Gold a try on my next change.

I run the EaO30 on my 02. It works fine but it doesn't have the anti drainback valve. The Ea64 has the anti drainback valve. I don't see where it makes a difference to me since the filter sits at the bottom of the engine standing straight up.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
