Dont look at me MERVZ, you SAID to ask these newbie quesitons in here........most/all of my 4X4ing is on snow in winter.  Now that its summer should I make a point to find a place every so often to use 4X4?  I think I remember reading something about a 10 mile rule....10 miles per month???

I've always been told that it is good to run it every once in a while just to keep everything lubed up in the front. This keeps seals from drying out.

Thanks Friz, does 10 miles a month meet the "every once in a while" criteria?  I have been throwing it in when it's raining real bad.....

I sure wouldn't go out there looking for stuff to use it in, let the stuff find you.  I don't really buy the keeping things lubed up theory.  All those components are rotating all the time, just when you hit the 4x4 lever or button do they engage with each other.

JPshostr,

Those things are NOT rotating all the time. Unless you have one of the old late '70's model 4x4, you have a true part time 4x4.

If the transfer case is engaged, the front driveshaft, third member, and axles spin. This circulates fluid and lubricates the front end.

The hubs do not have to be locked to make this happen.
