Fuel pump module price

I have a 2001 Silverado 2500HD 6.0/4L80E with 90,000 miles, and the fuel gauge has been acting up. Sometimes it drops to empty, even with the truck parked, but running. It'll drop to E and then come back up. The time that it stays at E varies, it doesn't seem to have any regularity.

Also, I have listened to the pump when the gauge makes this jump, and I hear a difference in the tone.

I have heard that GM replacement fuel modules come with a new. redesigned connector that will keep this from happening.

Before I shell out the big bucks to do this repair I wanted to verify my info. Plus, eBay has modules for under $200, so I wanted to find out if they are the correct replacements, or if I should go GM.

TIA

The fuel level sensor has been updated to be more robust and withstand the effects of sulfur in the fuel, which is the cause of the gauge problem. I don't know if you know it or not, but you can buy just the sending unit portion of the fuel pump module. You don't need the whole module unless you need the pump. If you do buy the whole pump module, it *should* have the latest and greatest sending unit on it.

I can't speak for whatever they're selling on eBay. A GM fuel pump module will set you back about $400 (rough guess) whereas you can get just the updated sending unit itself for around $100.

What was worrying me was that the fuel pump sounded different when the gauge jumped. The first thing I though of was that there was a loose connection, such as a bad ground.

Considering the fact that somebody (I can't remember who) told me that there is a replacement part available from the dealer for about $150, it sounds like they were talking about the sending unit just for the gauge, just like you mentioned.

The truck has 90K on it, so what is the typical lifespan of a fuel pump? I happen to have the bed off the truck right now, so doing work to the fuel module is really easy for the time being. I'd hate to have the pump die in a month, but if it will last another 20K I'll probably leave it in.

FWIW, the ebay part is MU1089, which is a replacement for the MU86. Of course, the part numbers are 25176865 / 25345026 (why two are listed, I don't know), and when I checked the second number it comes up with a new number, 19121626. The first number doesn't come up as anything.

I guess this means the ebay part does not have the upgraded sending unit.

There is no typical life I can give you. We put pumps in vehicles still under warranty and I'm sure there are those that go 150,000+ miles on their pump. You could put it in a new pump and have it fail in six months, so give it your best shot I guess.

I don't do parts, so can't help you with part numbers.

My gauge was doing the same thing for about the last year and finally, the pump went out 3 days ago after stalling several times in the week prior. The pump is $350 with or without EVAP and includes the new sensor.

Jason, GM Tech is correct in concerning the life span of a pump. However, if it were mine with the miles you stated and iwas going into it, I would install the entire module.

I will tell you that Chevron Techron additive will help some sensors when they are having this problem. It will not repair a bad sensor of course but it will clean the unit and in many cases this is all it needs. Techron even states this right on their bottle. I would suggest you try it first at the rate of 1 0Z per gallon and I would do it for 2 tanks. Be sure you get full strength Techron and not their injector cleaner with Techron.

I will also offer one more piece of advice. If you are going to install a new module in the tank, make sure you are getting an OE type unit. By this, you want to be sure you are getting a pump that is the quivalent to the OE in form, fit and function. You do not want a copy. We are in the process or revamping our Fuel Pump Program so no matter what vehicle a customer has, the pump they receive will be exactly what came in their vehicle, either Bosch, Denso, Delphi or Airtex.
