2003 Silverado has hesitation

I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 1500 4.8L V-8with 55000 miles. When its cold or have been sitting for a while it will idle rough and has a hesitation when I accelerate. Is not bad yet. When its idleing rough, the RPM gauge will flux about +/- 200 RPM's. When it hesitates, I will let off the gas and it normally corrects itself. It mostly hesitates at low speeds, 10 to 25 MPH. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

try a throttle body cleaning. with only 55,000 miles, that would be the only thing I can think of that can cause hesitation at low speeds or idle. It's just a build up of carbon in the throttle body that's making it do what it's doing. you can get a can of throttle body cleaner at your local auto supply store for about 3 bucks.

Hey guys ...can i just buy this throttle body cleaner and use it on mine also ...just for the hell of it. should help i would think.

When I had my Ranger I used it kinda regularly and never had any problems. I didn't even think of using it for the Chevy. Guess I brain farted for a moment. I had 160,000 miles on it when i traded it in. I had a 98 Chevy S-10 and wanted to go back to the Chevy brand. So got rid of Ranger for Silverado.

Cleaning the TB is a good idea and can and should be done every two or three oil changes. Don't run the engine while cleaning it as the air will not be flowing through your mass air flow sensor while the intake tube is off and you will likely set a trouble code.

I have also heard that the OE wires can cause some hesitation after some miles. This is not likely but I have heard some people claim this.

are you getting any codes? P0171 or P0174? What does your fuel pressure look like at idle? is it steady or jumping around?

I would check the intake gaskets. While possible it is not likely the TB is causing this. You have a vacumn leak.

No codes, I cleaned the TB and everything is good now.

I'm glad the throttle body cleaning worked......Everytime I experience stalling or hesitation, the throttle body is the first thing I clean to try and resolve those problems. :o)

Thats awsome...so what brand or brands did you end up using.....im going to go get some and was wondering if i should revit up and spray it directly into the trottle or how is this done ...thanx ...

I just got a can of STP Throttle Body and Air Intake cleanner and took the hose off from the air filter off, sprayed it in there till it was decently clean and hooked the hose back up. You can use a tooothbrush to reach in there better and to help hold the throttle plate open. Engine off to avoid any codes like C & A s Dad sugested. Worked well. It was only like $2 or $3 bucks at NAPA.

Not a good idea to spray cleaner into electronically controlled throttle bodies. Instead, spray onto a rag and use the rag to wipe it clean.
