Running rough '96 Sub

Recommended Posts

Just today my wife's 96 suburban started spewing stinky (unburned fuel), idling and accelerating rough. The car has 160K on it. I did a full tune at 70K and have replaced the air cleaner and fuel filter more frequently. The car has had an exhaust leak just before one of the cats for the last 4 months or so, and part of the tail pipe has a hole it.

I've done no troubleshooting yet, but plan on doing a full tune tomorrow (plugs, wires, cap, rotor) check already clean air filter etc. Then see how she acts. If she's still running bad I'll check for vacuum leaks, O2 sensors, check compression and have the darned exhaust fixed.

Any ideas that help me narrow it down? The car is generaly driven at least 70 miles per day and has been most of it's life......

If it just happened out of the blue then I doubt it is anything tune-up related. If there any codes? Almost sounds like a stuck injector off the top of my head.

Thanks for the reply. The tune fixed the problem. The plugs I put in 90K ago were just plain old cheapy spark plugs and the gap had opened up to .080". I swapped the plugs with the $7 each factory plugs and replaced the cap and rotor and cleared the code. As an added bonus I had my exhaust leak fixed (new cat and dognut gaskets)................Zorrro

Thanks for the reply,I'm thinking of maybe a 1987 Grand National, looks like a fun car plus a good investment.
