Changing Oil

I plan on changing my own oil. I just recently changed the oil in my Ford Taurus. Is it the same basic procedure or does the 5.3L Vortec require anything special?

Ok. Also, if I were to use a full synthetic oil I know I would have to replace the filter if I planned on having an extended oil change. But I noticed that this filter is completely vertical. How does the oil stay in when I change the filter it is pointing straight down. Wouldn't it all come out?

if the filter points straight down, spilling the oil is just something you will have to deal with ( i know what a bad design) also, you should change the oil filter at every oil change, its cheap insurance at 3-4 bucks per oil change.

What I meant is say I have Mobil 1 in the engine. I want to go like 15,000 on the same oil. When I go to change the filter say every 5,000 miles, won't ALL the oil come falling out before I can replace the filter? Or will it come out slowly?

Only what is in the filter and some on top of the fitler in the engine. The rest is in the oil pan beside the filter. You will loose about half a quart of oil. If your going to run extended drains it would be a good idea to have an oil analysis done. Then they could tell you if you even needed to change your filter or not and exactly how far you could go on the oil. Could be longer or could be shorter. It all depends on your driving style and driving enviroment.

ok, thanks. I have another question. Autozone is having a deal on Pennzoil Platinum where if you buy 6 quarts you get a $15 Mastercard Gift card in the mail. If you subtract $15 from the over all oil price of 6 quarts, it comes out to about $20. Is this a good deal? Or should I get 6 quarts or Mobil 1 instead even if it comes out to more money?

That is a really good deal. Pennzoil Platinum is showing some good used oil analysis on bobistheoilguy.com Since all the talk of Mobil 1 going down to a Group III oil, Mobil will not comment on it either way, PP is a good deal at that price.

The best way to remove the vertical oil filer on a 5.3 V8 Silverado is to use a cap oil filter wrench.

Mine wouldn't fit up in there, but I have a crappy plastic one, it hit the side of the oil pan.

Just get one of these they work great for getting stuck oil filters loose.

Not sure about the 2002 5.3L engine, but on my 2006 the drain plug is horizontal. If you're not prepared for the jet of oil pi$$ing out you'll get oil everywhere. Someone mentioned a trick on one of the posts here that worked really well. It basically is a funnel made from an empty laundry detergent bottle. I cut the bottom off and used it to catch the oil and divert it into the drain pan.
