got a K&N intake kit for my truck today and putting it in tomorrow.

what gains or losses can I expect. More HP and less gas mileage?

i own a 05 1500 HD with the 6.0L w/4.10 gears 4x4

it doesnt seem much offroad. but once a month i tow my toys to

the sanddunes wich is what i bought it for.

any thoughts or experiences please share. thanks.

I bought a K&N on one of my past trucks specifically because it went off road a lot. It's way better than a paper filter for that purpose and it saved me a ton of money not buying paper filters all the time.

I never noticed a HUGE benefit beyond that though. Maybe a tiny bit more low end hp from a dead stop, no mileage pluses or minuses...plus that cool sound!

Opinions will probably be all over the place on these. Some swear by them, others think they are worthless.

I had one in the last truck.

- Improved the throttle response

- Seemed to have a bit more power near the top end (helped with towing)

- Cool sound

- No change in MPG

I've used K&N's for years and never had a problem with a dirty MAF and the SES light coming on. My guess is it was one bozo who installed a K&N which was dripping with oil or maybe thought they could oil it with the engine running and this "problem" spread through the grape-vine.

On the new truck I decided to give the AirAid Jr a try because I heard the stock airbox is not really restrictive:

- Cools sound

- Maybe a tad improvement in throttle response, but then this truck never seemed to have much of a lag

- Don't really have to push it when towing so I don't know about the top end

- No change in MPG

I ordered one, it made me lose the lowend pulling power. It gave me alot higher power band, which I did not like, I liked it lower where it was usable. I have a 2003 Suburban with the 5.3 engine. I tow a boat and it did ok with towing, but normal driving I lost about 2 mpg in the city. It made a loud annoying wine on the HWY that was just a nuisance, so I sent it back and put my Stock K+N Replacement back in the stock air box and it works much better.

I would say Send it back and spend your money on the Wait4meTune. You will be impressed with this, this is what I did and that is the best $158 I ever spent. I wish someone would have told me this before I ordered the K+N CAI, and just went this way first, but luckily Summit Racing took it back no problems. But for $275 compared to the Tune for 158, this is a no brainer if you know what it does.

Hope this helps you.

It makes a cool noise

LOL... I agree. Had and Airaid on my 1/2 ton and couldn't stand the noise. If your looking for a noticeable seat of the pants performance increase spend your money on a customer PCM tune. (Westers, Nelson, Wait4Me). I love my Wait4Me and it only cost $150.

I've got the newer 77 series on mine, and to be completly honest, can't really notice much of a difference. A little more throttle response from a stop, but as far as noise goes, I can't really hear it over the exhaust! However, if I open the hood at idle, I can hear the thing sucking in the air, but thats it. So, my advise would be to get a louder exhaust if you don't like the noise of the intake. Also, the more air in, more air out theory also applies here. If you are dumping 5000 CFM of air into the engine, but it can only expell 2500 CFM, the lesser of the volumes takes precedence. I think with an intake, and a free-er flowing header system or complete exhaust set-up, you may notice some small gains. Basically, you won't be blowing anyone's doors off with just an intake.

My dad just took his off of his 97 Silvy because it was causing some serious problems. It's back to stock and no problems.

you can expect it to be sucking hot air in from the engine compartment instead of cool dense air like the factor setup or a good aftermarket closed system. had an fipk on my tahoe and sold it after having it for a week for a volant.

How is the Volant? Im pretty set on getting the one & the ram air kit.

On subject. I just have the K&N stock replacement filter. P.O. put it in. Just dont clean the d**n thing near the driveway or anything you wouldn't want stained. I can only hear it when Im in park and I tap the gas.

the volant was good for what is was, when i had that truck it was the cutting edge of what was available (late 90's). fact is oiled filter elements have seen thier day, pain in the ass to maintain and f up maf's.

i am now running an outlaw power intake on the truck in my sig with thier dry filter element. they will ship you both if you want them. my advice to you if your looking for an intake for your 5.3l is consider NO OTHER INTAKES outside of the outlaw power system or the S&B system.

Sandshot, I would also watch those silicone levels in your oil. You can do so with regular oil annalysis. K & N and other oiled gauze filters will for sure let in more dirt. The question is how much is too much. For me, any additional dirt entering my engine is too much. This is why I selected the TrueFlow Intake and filter.

Valsport, I will respectivley disagree that the 2 CAIs are the only options to consider. I will not be critical of these units but I would encourage anyone to take a look at the TrueFlow unit. Here is why:

Retains the factory air box (true cold air system)

Uses an oiled foam filter & the oil uses a Tactifier so it will not contamintate your MAF Sensor

Very High Quality with excellent fit

Reall nice looking under the hood

Nice and quiet. Only slightly more "intake music" under load

Not sayig it is the best for everyone, but for me, it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

I have been conducting a test with my AEM cai and the stock system using my scan gauge intake air temp reading. What I found out so far is the AEM brings in cooler air on freeway 3-5 degrees over out side temp.Stock is 7-10 over.

City driving the stock box is 10-12 over and AEM is 20 over out side temp.

Cut a 3" hole in bottom of stock box and that gave me about 2 degrees cooler.

Saw no differance in performance with eather of them.

stock is on now.

Other systems might run cooler? Just my 2 cents.

I would agree you should watch silicates if using a K&N type. I had one on my Tahoe for about 150K and I had oil analysis done every oil change. My silicates were 1ppm higher than the paper filter and IMO well under control. I now have 183K on my truck and Blackstone says it is wearing like it has 30K. I think it has more to do with oiling. I think there is a fine line between under oiling and over oiling. Under oiling and you let silicates pass. Over oiling and you coat the MAF.

Having said all that, I removed it and went back to the stock air box and a drop in K&N. While I believe it had better throttle response with the K&N, I grew tired of the added noise after 65 years.

    • GDI Injector tips are in the combustion chamber and yes, they are subject to the same aromatic hydrocarbon based carbon build up the entire chamber is subjected to. Chevron Techron is a PEA based cleaner (polyether amine)  that is VERY effective if the dose is high enough.  Carbon the tips disrupts the spray pattern so keeping them clean is kind of a big deal. It will clean more than the injector tips. It will keep the inside of the injector tip clean as well. When they shut off they 'hot soak' building varnish internally behind the pintle. The tip, unlike most MFI systems have several orifices of very small diameter. They have to stay clean to work right. That spray pattern is supposed to spray into the cup in the piston, not all over the cylinder walls. Old guys will understand...    Top Tier Chevron has enough of the cleaner to be effective if used regularly. Other solutions could be Shell V Power Nitro + Premium and Exxon/Mobil Supreme Plus Premium ONLY use a different chemistry to the same effect with the added bonus of a friction/antiwear additive as well. Red Line SI-1 is PEA based as well with an upper cylinder lube. There's a white paper on their site for shock treatment of system left untreated for long periods. AMSOIL PI has a full system cleaner of yet another chemistry that will strip carbon out of the power cylinder pretty quick. Gumout Regane is also PEA based but at very low doses and those that are isopropanol based will not be effective. Alcohol content is way to low. Chevron Techron in any pump gas, Use by package instructions. 10 oz per 15 gallons every 3,000 miles. First use may require two treatments.    So, Techron, Red Line SI-1 and AMSOIL PI if batch treating and Shell, XOM Premium or any Chevron Fuel will not just keep it clean, but will clean it if dirty. No other fuel "I'm aware of will do that".    Flex Fuel motors. If you use at least 40% alcohol on a regular basis they won't carbon at all. PEA is not recommended for fuels over E-20     (www.carparts.com)
    • It is always a good idea to exercise it at least every few months to make sure the actuators don’t get stuck. It is also a good idea to actually drive it for at least a few hundred feet when you do that so seals experience motion and oil movement.  Off pavement or snow/ice is best for this, but driving wet pavement in a straight line for a  short distance will work if you don’t have other options. I have  forgotten and gone as long as six months between exercising it on my 2021 and it has always shifted promptly.  I usually just use my straight 300 foot gravel driveway.
    • Absolutely!  These forums are legion with posts of people complaining that their truck wouldn't go into 4WD when they needed it to.  Most of them hadn't used it ever or in years.   I try to run mine through the paces every month or so and drive it a few miles on a dirt trail near the house a couple times a year if not already off-roading.
    • The battery is  very new, The  truck is  essentially undrivable  so I have had it  towed  to the  dealer. Since  this is an E Assist  truck  the dealer  seems  the only option at this point. Scan showes multiple  codes. The  repair wll not be  cheap
    • Not a bad idea to check codes. But, if you have an old battery and/or electrical gremlins, most of those codes will be false.
