tonight on the freeway my truck threw a P0101. Then when i got off the freeway, some 100 miles later it didnt want to go foreward after i stopped. I have to rev the hell out of it to get it to go foreward at all. The tranny was getting hotter and hotter while this was happening. Reverse is fine, just wont go foreward. Its got fluid, and when i changed the filter some 4000 miles ago it looked fine, just some dust-like metal on the magnet. I cant figure it out. HELP!!!

Without looking it up, I THINK P0101 has to do with the MAF sensor, but I could be wrong. In any case, it's not a tranny code and has nothing to do with no forward movement.

Sounds like a serious internal trans problem. It would need some diagnosis to find out what. I have no guesses for you.

P0101 basically means that there is a problem with the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit. The PCM detects that the actual MAF sensor frequency signal is not within a predetermined range of the calculated MAF value for more than 4.0 seconds.

SymptomsYou will likely not notice any serious drivability problems, although there may be symptoms.

Possible SolutionsThe simplest thing to do is to reset the code and see if it comes back. Then start with the cheapest, easiest repair procedures:

Inspect for the following conditions:

An incorrectly routed harness--Inspect the harness of the MAF sensor in order to verify that it is not routed too close to the following components:

- The secondary ignition wires or coils

- Any solenoids

- Any relays

- Any motors

A low minimum air rate through the sensor bore may cause this DTC to set at idle or during deceleration. Inspect for any vacuum leaks downstream of the MAF sensor.

A wide open throttle (WOT) acceleration from a stop should cause the MAF sensor g/s display on the scan tool to increase rapidly. This increase should be from 6-12 g/s at idle to 230 g/s or more at the time of the 1-2 shift. If the increase is not observed, inspect for a restriction in the induction system or the exhaust system.

The barometric pressure (BARO) that is used in order to calculate the predicted MAF value is initially based on the MAP sensor at key ON.

When the engine is running the MAP sensor value is continually updated near WOT. A skewed MAP sensor will cause the calculated MAF value to be inaccurate. The value shown for the MAP sensor display varies with the altitude. With the ignition ON and the engine OFF, 103 kPa is the approximate value near sea level. This value will decrease by approximately 3 kPa for every 305 meters (1,000 feet) of altitude.

A high resistance on the ground circuit of the MAP sensor can cause this DTC to set.

Any loss of vacuum to the MAP sensor can cause this DTC to set.

Alot of times this condition may be related to aftermarket accessories, and I also don't think this has anything to do with your transmission. If the code were for the trannie it would start with a P07 or P08.

OK, got it back from the dealer all fixed. The p0101 code was caused by a loose clamp on the intake i found. The dealer just put in a brand new 4L80e. They did this in 2 days, i was pretty impressed. My mileage went down, but im guessing its cause its not broken in yet. how long is the break in period and when should i change the fluid. I'm thinking like 2000 miles. I'm not familiar with the new trannys.

Just drive it. No break in necessary. Don't waste your money changing the fluid at 2000 miles. Just go by the normal maintenance schedule.

I remember when we would put in a new th350 or 400 the recommendation was 200 miles for break in and change the fluid on the next oil change. So i don't need to baby it like ive been doin?

Jeez, you're showing your age. Times have changed!

Im 21. I just have alot of experience with old gm vehicles. Rednecks like to keep thier vehicles around awhile. For example, the Model T in our backyard.

Thanks for your advice too.

Apparently (according to my Chevy dealer) the MAF if not working properly can damage the transmission. (I kept throwing a P0101 code) and eventually my transmission went out, they said the cause of my transmission going out was the MAF, so for the time being they unplugged it and the transmission shifted fine, I replaced the MAF, no codes, solid shifts... no problems.

I think a transmission is in my near future. I'll go the same route you went with the brand new transmission dealer installed. How much did that set you back ? I'm guessing about $2300 ?

I think it should still be under warranty as he has a 2004 unless he put on 36+ with no extended warranty.

Actually it cost me $100. I bought it used From a dodge dealer and got the 2 year warranty ( thank god), soo the only thing i paid for was the deductible. Brand new 4L80E, not re-manufactured.

They did all the work and had it back to me the morning of the second day washed and with gas in the tank. I thought that was worth some recognition. The dealer was Ed Moses Dodge in Scottsdale, AZ.
