Airbag Light

So I was driving last night and noticed that my airbag light stayed on while driving. After parking it, turning it off, and starting it again about an hour later it hasn't come back on since. It does the normal flashing when I first start it now but it isn't back on.

Should I be concerned?

ive had this happen a couple of times on my 97. ill just be driving and the airbag light will come one. If i stop the truck, shut the key off and the start the truck again the light goes off and doesnt come back on. I think its happend twice. Not sure what caused it. But im also interested in what people have to say about it.

My 2000 Impala's air bag light will sometimes come on for awhile and then back off. Took it to a dealership and they said there were no codes in the computer. He also said he wouldn't be able to do anything unless the light stays on, then he'd be able to diagnosis it.

The worst that can happen is the air bag won't work in a crash. At least that's what I was told.

This might be coincidence, but here's a little morsel of information.

I was taking a bunch of kids (I work at a middle school) on a brief ride around the school campus (outdoors). They were in the bed and having a blast. I gunned it and hit a little mound/hill. The approach angle was a little too harsh so it hit the front of the truck and cracked the plastic skidplate below the truck (fortunately it didn't really f**k anything up and there was no loss of momentum so I didn't look like a complete idiot).

Later in the week my airbag light came on and then went off...it did that twice (in a manner that you described).

For the heck of it I went under the bumper and firmly pressed on the connections for the airbag sensors (to make sure they were really tight together). They are locatable by their bright orange plastic tags.

Nothing seemed to give or compress, however, I haven't had any sign of an airbag light since my "fix".

I agree it's very likely a connector problem, or a pinched wire. I had this happen, and the problem turned out to be a broken connector under the passenger seat.

If the problem is repeatable, you can somewhat isolate the problem by turning off the passenger side (assuming you have the key disable). If the dash warning light no longer illuminates, there is a good chance the problem originates from the passenger side. Also, this would be further indication that you may have a problem with connections under the passenger seat. This how I found my problem anyway.

Good luck.

I had this problem everytime I would be driving in the rain, or going through a car wash. Since the newer trucks seem to allow more water to flow into the door jamb/engine compartment than the older ones, my problem stemmed from the door grommet on the drivers side. I temporarily ran a few wires into it and siliconed the hole up after I had the wires through. Apparently I didnt seal it well enough as the water followed the wires right into the cab. All the connections on the floorboard of the drivers side were all corroded and whatnot. Apparently the airbag wiring runs through there somewhere. Maybe start there and see if there = tany corrosion or bare wires.
