transfer case whine

This is my first post to this site although I have found some very interesting info since I joined a month ago.

I purchased a 01 2500HD 6.0 and have found a few things that need to be looked at. Your advice would be appreciated.

1. The transfer case has a very subtle whine when engaged. Is this normal?

2. I have a small leak from one of the water pump gaskets (L side). what has to be removed to get them in there.

3. upper ball joint boots are torn. Am I better off just replacing the whole control arm?

4. Transmission should have oil/filter change. I see this trans has a drain plug so after draining just pull the pan and change out the filter etc or is there more to it than this.

1. if it's very subtle, then I would say it is normal. If you are worried though, you may want to have it checked by a professional.

2. Usually just your upper fan shroud, fan, belt, and then the water pump, but on newer engines I don't know if that holds true.

3. No, just have the upper ball joints replaced. Much cheaper than an entire control arm.

4. That's pretty much it, though I might suggest that, on the new trans pan gasket, using some RTV (preferably the black stuff) to make sure it both stays put while reattaching the pan and to help ensure a good seal. Make sure to only use a thin bead, however, as you don't want it getting inside the trans. If you're worried about it getting in the trans, then make sure to let it sit for at least the minimum required drying time (around 6-8 hours, iirc).
